Questions about Xbox LIVE and USB-drive support

I own an Arcade unit, no HDD, never had it online.

 

Dumb questions I'm sure, but...

 

1. Does USB-drive support require downloading a firmware update?

2. Is an XBOX Live subscription required to download XBLA games and firmware updates?

3. Can I download XBLA games to and play them from a USB-drive?
