8bitguy1 #1 Posted April 24, 2010 Hi All, My ultrasatan arrived today, but unfortunately I can't seem to get it to function properly... I get through to Formatting the hard disk (using HD Driver) and I get the following error when I try to format. "Data on the disk in drive C: (sometimes it says drive G:) may be damaged. You must use the right kind of floppy disk; you must connect your hard disk properly." I have tried with both SanDisk media and Verbatim media...both are 2GB cards, they are all I have. Any thought's or help is appreciated...I'm hoping I'm just doing something silly. Thanks,

8bitguy1 #3 Posted April 24, 2010 I did. Here is something very odd, it seems to work fine with ICD Pro. Of course ICD Pro is harder to transfer files from PC to ST, so I'd really rather use HD Driver. One question though, how (under ICD Pro) do I see the other partitions? (I really am a noob at this ST stuff). I've done a few google searches and read about 1000 posts (seem's like) here and at Atari-Forum. I even downloaded the PDF "Ultra-Satan Partitioning User Guide" and tried it with HD Driver 7.8. (as instructed). I really feel like I'm just missing something silly.... 8bitguy1 #5 Posted April 24, 2010 TOS is version 1.0 (According to the ICD HardDisk Formatter) I don't know any other way to check... I have this mobo... http://atari-forum.com/wiki/index.php/File:ST_Motherboard_C070523-001_Rev_D_exxos.jpg Which is the 6 chip TOS version (I think). If my TOS is the issue, I will order a new one.... Thanks for any help.... (I doubt its a hardware problem with the unit itself, it was well packed and everything seems to work except for formatting partitioning under HD Driver)

TOS 1.0 is buggy as all get out. I wouldn't even begin to try to use any mass storage stuff with it. You need to upgrade to version 1.4. That's usually just a simple ROM replacment, either 2 or 6 chips. Also, HDDriver v7.8 is a couple of versions behind - I'd update it to 8.xx. Its been so long since I used ICD Pro I honestly don't remember much about it. HTHs.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance; I was really into the ST until about 1990 and I'm just getting reacquainted with my old friend. I never had (couldn't afford) a hard drive with the ST, and I have Ultrasatan on the way from this same batch as 8bitguy. So the "Atari Hard Disk Utilities" (whatever they are) is not sufficient to get this going? How is it that "HDDriver" allows a PC to read the SD card but not without it? I'm confused! TOS 1.4 is $60 (!!!) at BEST. HD Driver is $60. Ultrasatan is $130 : add shipping for everything. This isn't exactly what I had in mind when I started, but since I have Ultrasatan coming, I guess I'm committed now! What can be done with TOS 1.0 and whatever free stuff there is out there? Can't use the device? Seems like I remember other users using HD (SH204) with TOS 1.0 back in the day. I am only aware of 40-folder limit being a problem but I thought there is a "xxxFOLDER.PRG that will fix that. AAAARGH!!!!!! I don't know anything about this!!! I think I'll be glad when I get this figured out and working, though. Thanks.
8bitguy1 #8 Posted April 25, 2010 (edited) I will get out...thanks...lol. Tos is available from B&C as well... eBay Auction -- Item Number: 130384818399 Much cheaper and they have both versions too! I will update if this fixes the issue. Thanks. Edited April 25, 2010 by 8bitguy1

Just to add, I did get it to work with TOS 1.0 and ICD Pro (which is free), the HD Driver just provides more functionality with transferring data (from my research). I think (experts please correct me if I'm wrong) that 32MB or less SD card can be read by ICD Pro with files from PC, if you follow all the instructions very carefully. +wood_jl #10 Posted April 25, 2010 (edited) I'll say it's cheaper!!!! Thanks! Now I can't remember if I have 2 or 6-chip. I am talking old 520ST without the drive built in. I think that means 6-chip. This is 520STm so it's the later (of the 2) original 520ST without drive. Time to get out screwdriver again and look. I know this is a different issue (than this thread) but what about software compatibility and Rainbow TOS? I was really wanting these computers to play the old 1985 games. Isn't there some problem with some games and anything BUT original TOS 1.0? I thought I saw that somewhere, but I can't remember for sure. That's why I was "happy" to leave the original TOS in place. Am I wrong? Other than the improved dialog box, what else does this TOS do? Edited April 25, 2010 by wood_jl
+DarkLord #11 Posted April 25, 2010 You will lose a very few games but most will play fine. Check overview of TOS v1.4 from one of the wiki/FAQs: "Most common version of TOS; last version to run on pre-STe machines; most compatible with games. More bug fixes (e.g. archive attribute works); improved hard-disk handling and performance. Faster disk copy; file move function; copy preserves date/time stamps; folder renaming; auto-run of GEM apps at startup; larger screen support; file "fastload" flag for faster startup; improved file selector; DOS-compatible disk format; keyboard reset. AKA "Rainbow TOS" because of animated colour Atari "Fuji" logo in desktop "About" dialog box." HTHs.
wongck #12 Posted April 27, 2010 There is a loadable tos 1.04 somewhere on the web. I remember using this alot on the 520ST until I upgraded it to Tos 2.06. I tried looking in my floppies but couldn't find it.
walter_J64bit #13 Posted May 4, 2010 I've like to know do have to use Hard Driver with UltraSatan?
8bitguy1 #14 Posted May 8, 2010 HD Driver is not necessary for UltraSatan. In can use the ICD Driver, which is widely available. Update to my issue with TOS 1.0 and HD Driver. I received my TOS 1.4 yesterday (Rainbow) and installed it. No issues there, unfortunately I still get the Data in Drive X maybe damaged message from HD Driver when I try to format a card. So atleast for my UltraSatan, HD Driver does not work! I am stuck with ICD's drivers, which don't allow (easily) data transfer from the PC. Has anyone else experienced this, with this batch of UltraSatans?
zaxon #15 Posted May 8, 2010 8bit guy, try driveimage, you can download it from www.zaxon.eu. Format card in ultrasatan, partitions etc. Put card in to card reader, run driveimage and you have access to card via Pc.
8bitguy1 #16 Posted May 9, 2010 I'll try it tonight....looks promising. Thanks!
