What are the power supply specs for a PC 3.5"drive?

Recommended Posts

I'm about to add a PC 3.5" drive to my 1040 as a second drive, I have all the parts to do it now, except I need to know the voltage&amps needed to supply it power (standard plug&play drive if I was installing in my PC).

Apparently no one here knows the answer to my question, except for myself...now. I found out that the red wire is 12v and the yellow 5v and the two black wires are of course grounds. Just for future reference for anyone who want s to use a PC drive as a SECOND ST drive externally.

Someone always knows ;-)

Most drives don't even use the 12volt anymore so I would forget that one. Typical power is only a couple of 100ma or so. I dont know the exact ma run rating I will find out for you! I do remember that the motor ON current can peek to around 1.2amps even though the actual run current is about half of that. A typical supply of 5V 500ma should work fine. Thats about what I use for my External drives anyway!

The drive I'm going to use is a "dual" drive, with a 1.44meg 3.5" drive and a 360k 5.25" floppy drive. So I think I have to use the 5V for the 3.5 and the 12V for the 5.25. But I don't have to worry any more anyway, because I just go an old PS/1 case with the power supply still in it, so I'm going to mount my dual drive and hardisk in the PC case and just run a ribbon cable from the case into the back of my ST. Actually, I have two HD drives and my current plan is to install one in the STF where the RF normally goes, and the second, slave to the first, in the PS/1 case.
