Tanman's Mystery Garage 4/29

Recommended Posts

Ok, first off let me know if you find this annoying and want me to stop posting this. Second, let me know if should post it elsewhere.

I have continued unboxing everything from my garage. It is almost like I am digging up an ancient city as the deeper I go, the farther back in my lifetime I go. I thought I would post some of the interesting things that I am unearthing. Last week I posted an old pong machine I had. Today, I am posting a Star Wars comic from 1977. It was created by Marvel. Something unique is it is an extra large comic, 13 inch length. I was not able to find anything in the 5 minutes I looked on the internet but I probably was not on the right web pages. Let me know if you want me to post more pictures. Anyone have extra info?

Looks like you have a Star Wars comic published by Whitman (the W near the price tag).  It's a compilation of the first three issues of the Star Wars comic series by Marvel.  There are two versions of this: one published by Marvel, the other Whitman.  From what I'm reading from Wookieepedia, the comic series was very popular in the 70s.

Yep.. that's the oversize comic books (which I LOVED as a kid and still have). As said, that's the first one which is a compilation of the first 3 Star Wars comics. The 2nd one is shown below and is the next 3 comics which rounds out the movie (starting from the escape from the detention center to the death star battle)

Great stuff. That's the Whitman variation which came out later after the Marvel originals.

I'm positive I had that very same comic book.

I was born in the 80s, so I didn't have a chance to see these growing up.  But, I do have the published transcripts of the Star Wars radio show.  I demand them to make the radio-show only scenes into movie scenes, somehow.

You would have to consult comic experts, but from what I understand these comics were fairly common and popular.  It isn't like Combat popular, but not that far off.

Oh yeah I don't think they're too rare and worth about 3-20 bucks if you bought it now. Heck I myself have 2 copies of the Supersize Marvel ones. 1 of the Whitman ones. And one that is actually all of them together in one thick supersize book.

<edit> I guess google works too :P

They're not terribly valuable, more collectible as oddities, as most comic collectors would prefer to have the original printings of the comic. The original printings were barely worth a buck or two each 15 years ago but are now somewhat valuable.

What's interesting about the SW comic adaption is that Marvel based it off the original shooting script so the comic actually has all the cut scenes from the original film such as the Jabba the Hutt sequence that was reinserted in the 90s. It also has many other cut scenes in it, some of which are also featured in the radio adaption.
