Chuck Gill
I now this is an old thread but it may be still of interest. I just received one of the "Irish" adapters from Ebay. I tried every mouse I had stashed away and none of them worked. I saw in a post from crash that the Logitech M110 optical mouse would work. I went to Fry's Electronics and they had the white version in stock for only $9.99. I picked one up and low and behold it works great! Fry's also has a $3.99 PS/2 female to male usb adapter that should allow a mouse with a PS/2 connector to work with the Irish adapter. I haven't tested this though. -Chuck
Chuck Gill
Update - Fry's also has a $3.99 PS/2 female to male usb adapter that should allow a mouse with a PS/2 connector to work with the Irish adapter. I haven't tested this though. I tested it with an HP optical mouse that had a PS/2 plug on the end of the cord, I plugged it in to the Fry's adapter and it worked fine with the Ebay adapter -Chuck

Of course, this thread is still of interest! Replacing finicky ball mice on classic computers is is an ongoing endeavor! The Logitech M-BJ58 is what I use. It's an old one, but look how many are still on Ebay...... http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_trksid%3Dp5197.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3Dlogitech%2Bm-bj58%26_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40 I can't imagine how so many people have time to waste selling "practically worthless" used old PC mice. Of course for this (ST) application, they're gold. But there aren't many people in the world with such a specialty use, and there are dirt-cheap new Chinese mice for sale on every corner, all over the world (for PC). Thankfully, these are available, however! I see these are still for sale on ebay! eBay Auction -- Item Number: 120784673053 There's also a guy selling a used on, in the U.S. It comes with a Logitech M110 mouse. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 300856682108 I have tried mine (a couple years ago) with whatever the cheapest Logitech mouse was back then, and it was surprisingly low-resolution! When I hooked it to my PC and attempted to use Paint to draw something, it looked almost like I had Parkinson's. I'm no artist, but I could tell this thing was way lower resolution than the old M-BJ58. I don't remember what model, as I took it back. A low-resolution machine like ST (or Amiga) might not make much of a difference, as using this mouse to draw on HD screen. Interestingly, the guy sells an external (similar to the ST's) and internal versions for the Amiga, but I have yet to hear ONE Amiga-head plug it, here. I know this is an Atari site, but there are some Amiga-heads here. Hell, I have an Amiga and I bought one of these, and I use it with the same Logitech M-BJ58 that I use on my STs. I guess Amiga-heads are fine with their crusty old mice. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 120814385754 eBay Auction -- Item Number: 120777266394 I don't understand why not; if I were a serious Amiga-head, I'd be all over that internal one! I have the external, since I'm not that comfortable digging around inside an Amiga, and have no clue what mods (if any) this would require. Interesting that there's no discussion of it, however. Like everything else, price keeps sneaking up. I got mine a couple years ago, when they were £14.99.
delvis
I am using a Microsoft USB mouse with the PS2 adapter on an Eiffel and it is working fine. I did try a smaller Microsoft USB mouse and it doesn't seem to see it. Nice using a optical USB mouse on the ST.
+Guitarman
Well, I'm going to throw a wrench in the cog!! I am using a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 'cordless' with the adapter and it works great!!! So, don't give up on a cordless solution. skullandbones99
After trying many "normal" USB mice which failed, I found this novelty mice in one of my boxes... ..the novelty car mouse seems to work. I assume the mouse is using PS/2 protocol over the USB connector. This looks like the mouse... http://www.amazon.co.uk/NGC-Street-Mouse-Red/dp/B000R3UEWE/ref=sr_1_35?ie=UTF8&qid=1383246514&sr=8-35&keywords=novelty+car+mouse Amazon says the model is NG1001R and the bottom of my mouse says the model is NG-1001. Hopefully they are the same, I guess R means red colour. Edited October 31, 2013 by skullandbones99
Nick Harlow
hmm interesting topic.. I actually have a couple of these adapters sitting on a shelf - can't remember where or whom I got them from. but I also have a collection of mice (usb). I have tomorrow off (dentist) and will see if I can get them to work and list numbers and models for you.
