Cart dumpers question (7800, cart selector...)

Recommended Posts

I have seen several posts about cart dumpers, and I would like to get more information on the process. I have a EPROM/EEPROM chip reader/writer, that could handle the job, but probably only on an removed chip. Some posts mention a 7800 and/or a cart selector. I have a 7800 and just got a cart selector, what else is needed, how is the modification done? Can the Harmony be used in this process? That would be nice!

Building a 7800 dumper isn't too bad if you possess some basic soldering skills. Basically you'll need a 78LS04 (hex inverter) chip, a bit of wire, an eprom burned with the new rom, and a parallel port cable.

Here's a link to the instructions. Click on Atari VCS 7800 development system (second release).

I have been thinking about making a Harmony-based dumper. In theory, you could put a cart to dump plus a Harmony in a Game Brain, boot to Harmony, then switch to the other cart and hit reset while Harmony copies the contents of the cart to its EEPROM. This would require software support on the PC to then dump Harmony's EEPROM.

One thing that would be easier would be to make a Copycart out of Harmony. It would simply clone the other cart in the Game Brain, and Harmony could be dumped through various other means (we have software that can do this over USB but it's not user friendly.) This might be a feasible way to dump certain one-of-a-kind carts without funky hardware or questionable practices.
