What's your favorite paddle compatable game?

Tac-Scan, encounter at L-5 and Astroblast are all shooters, breakout is almost a game type in itself (squash? puzzle? "blockbreaker"?), Super Breakout, Circus Atari is the same type - and warlords/medieval mayhem are a modified version of that. Kaboom I'd just call a "Catch" game, and beat em' and eat 'em. Night driver is a driving game, obviously. Pong, what amounts to it on the 2600, could be called catch more accurately than blockbreaker.

There's also SCSIcide, which I understand is a "catch" style game.

3 shooters: Tac Scan and Enounter at L-5,(although Astroblast can use the joystick just fine)

9 "Blockbreaker": Breakout, Super Breakout, Warlords, Medieval Mayhem, Circus Atari, Fireball, Bachelor Party (x3 for bachelorette party and bachelor party/gigolo)

6 "Catch": Kaboom, Beat 'em and eat 'em, pong sports, SCSIcide (x3 for variations)

1 driving (night driver)

1 driving game with driving controller (indy 500)

Whatever party mix is

And Jedi Arena battles, what do you call that?

Don't forget Casino!!! (my favorite paddle game).

Hm. I looked it up and from what I see it seems to only use the paddles so that four people can play - is it possible to use the joystick at all?

I've never tried it. I assumed it could only be played with paddles.

I was reading some Atari game reviews and learned that Canyon Bomber is also a paddle controlled game (although the AtariAge page says it is possible to use the joystick for certain parts of the game). AtariAge doesn't mention a joystick option for Casino so I think it is paddle control only.

Ah, thanks. That explains why I didn't "get" canyon bomber. If I can recall correctly, I could get it to drop the bomb, but nothing else. I assumed that *was* the game. Still, it's easy to classify - it's a blockbreaker for sure, just turned upside down.

You're still missing "Street Racer", which has primitive graphics and may not be one of the better games. However, because it's a paddle game, it IS very responsive to your movements, and you can accelerate up to and beyond your ability to keep from crashing, making it a true challenge. I do enjoy playing it from time to time.

Are you just counting up all the paddle controller games? You should know there's already a list on this site: Controllers - Atari Paddles. It seems fairly complete, though there may be some homebrews missing.

I remember really liking the "brickdown" game on the APF M1000 we had when I was a kid and I like to play Blockbuster on the Microvision now and then. I just don't know what it is about the Atari 2600 versions of Breakout that don't click with me.

ahah.. that helps. I actually like Cobra Strike/Action force too, and I was missing it. Blackjack as well as Casino, interesting... I have picnic too, but I don't really play it. Solar Storm looks pretty good - the shooters seem to be pretty popular as far as responses here, so maybe that one should be tried out
