Trak-ball?

Recommended Posts

In the controllers section on this site, you can click on paddles and it gives you a list of all compatible games, but there aren't any listed under trak-ball. So other than centipede and the missle command hack, what games are TB compatible?

There are only two games that are compatible with the trak-ball, both are hacks.

Tj' missle command hack, and Kenfused's 7800 centipede tb hack.

You can use it with any joystick game in joystick mode. And you can set it to TB mode to cheat in track & field.

Atari never released any games that used the 2600/7800 trak-ball in true trak-ball mode.

I thought Centipede 2600 was made to be used w/ trak-ball as an option, guess I could be wrong. If I can use it w/ any joystick game then I should be able to use it w/ the original missle command, right?

I did not know that!

The rat bastards ;) I remember purchasing their Trak-Ball controller in the early 80's and being duped that way. Ended up using the controller more on my Amiga's years later than the 2600. lol

Ken's Centipede TB 7800 hack is glorious though. It's worth it just for that.

I think it's the perfect home version of Centipede, though you could argue that the 5200 version is better.

Too bad it's not available for purchase at the store. Could always get Al to burn one for you though with the custom cart he's now offering :) Or wait for the 7800 version of Harmony

Works great with The Activision Decathlon too! :)

So there's no sense in me getting a TB for my 2600? It will not work correctly with Centipede and Crystal Castles?

Then what is the point of making a trackball controller if no games are compatible with it?

I read they had plans to, but the best laid plans and all that jazz.

There are some games for the early Atari computers that used the track ball in real track ball mode as well. I'll have to look the list up again. There weren't many, but there were a few.

Even if it doesn't work in real trackball mode at least you can pretend it does and have a little fun. Its another piece of Atari to collect is nothing else at all.

Missile Command is one of those 400/800 games. I have it and the TB works nicely.

It will work fine for those games as a joystick. You simply won't get analog control where the faster you roll the ball the faster you move.

Missile Command and Final Legacy on Atari 400/800/XL/XE use true track ball mode. Final Legacy uses it in port 2 and only for surface to air. There's also a conversion of the 5200 Centipede that uses Trak Ball.

Millipede Atari 8 bit advertises Trak Ball too, but, as far as I know, like the 2600, doesn't support true track ball mode.
