Shephda #1 Posted June 8, 2010 Hello everyone. I went to one of the local used game stores today to achieve my personal goal of 100 2600 games. Took my list of 85 games and spent 20 minutes digging through the .99 bin. Not only did I get to 100, I got all the Realsports series, and got a new "letter" in my second quest to get at least one game for each letter of the alphabet! DickNixonArisen #2 Posted June 8, 2010 Neat. It's kind of funny how various collectors have these little steps or goals they want to fill, like 'every kids game' or most commonly every game made by a given company. Or, insanely, every NTSC game released. It's a little bit like the ol' "I won't do anything harder than shrooms... ok, shrooms but no coke... oh, well, I won't do heroin... oh, well I'll smoke it but I won't shoot it... well, I won't mainline..." I can't pretend that I'm not collecting for pretty much every system I own. That's kinda scary to say out loud though. More power to you if you can actually set goals and limits and follow them, It makes collecting easier and more fun. So I hear.

Well, my milestones are just markers along my quest to have every damn game ever made. My addiction is such that I even collect those Madden "XX" games. Yeah, I have a problem. I've been seriously collecting for little over 18 months and my total stands at 1071 games. Systems are from the Atari 2600 to the 360. No PS3 yet, but I'm going to sell off my MTGO account and get one! I like setting goals and then concentrating on them, makes collecting for me a bit more fun than mindlessly hunting for games. My last "goal" was to hit 100 NES, I'm now up to 126. Yeah it's an obsession but it's a damn fun one! Happy hunting... DickNixonArisen #4 Posted June 8, 2010 Wow, that was Quick. Don't burn money dude, scaryconomy! I mean quick in that I have over a thousand games, but I've been collecting for fifteen years. Mostly NES and 26. Setting goals is indeed a good plan. MTGO, eh? Do you play non digital MTG? I have a thread about it in modern gaming... there's a money pit for you. I'm a cheap SOB, that and I seem to have this karma thing where I find games cheap. A good example is last year I found at a thrift, 4 bags of SNES games with 5 games in each. They were marked $4.99, in one of the bags was Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World All Stars, and Mario RPG. All those bags had over $150 worth of games. They only "normal" console I don't have is a Master System, and a PS3. I don't count systems like the Fairchild and such because they are fairly rare in the wild. MTG is a HUGH money pit. I love the game but with 4 sets coming out each year and some of the Mythic Rares going for near $100, I can't justify that. Today a tourney level deck runs about $600.00 to $800.00. Insane. I tried paper magic once at a local card shop and did not like the experience. I did not care for some 14 year old kid spitting Taco Bell and Monster all over my cards. How about some 27 year old dude arguing libertarian vs. liberal politics and farting? That's MY usual partner. Or my wife, a sexy nurse! I've spent probably 400 dollars total on my MTG collection, which is 8 Wii games new, or 200 2600 commons. Not bad considering the fun I get out of it, so it doesn't have to be a HUGH money pit, but it easily can be. I never buy packs anymore. When a new set comes out, I typically buy 5-10 singles from it, as they're usually the only things I want out of it anyway. What I really want is a console game (for a console that I have), to get the fun without the expense.

Also playing others on line is cool. I hear you on the other stuff, I'm not anti-people but it seems most MTG players are just YU-Gi-Oh players with drivers licenses. pinball22 #10 Posted June 9, 2010 I spent the first ten years of MtG as a hardcore player... many thousands of dollars spent. Sold off all the big stuff (Unlimited set, Arabian set, etc.) in 2003 for $2750. Still have a few things worth something that I'm probably going to sell soon. pinball22 #13 Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) anything in particular? not that I'm in that market AT ALL... Eight Force of Wills, a near-complete play set of duals (missing two Volcanic Islands), four Sinkholes. A sealed AN pack and a sealed LG pack. keilbaca #14 Posted June 10, 2010 Congrats! I know what its like to hit my 100 Atari game milestone... then 200... then 300... Now I'm close to 400. I've been working on rebuilding my collection though thanks to a couple exes and a theft in Texas... I just hit over 700 games myself, but I used to have over 800 or so. Come to think about it I need to catalog ALL my games... not just the INTV, Atari and NES. Find out what I have missing, what I actually have, etc. ^_^ Congrats again! Also, yes, MTG is a HUGE money pit. I am so glad I got out of type 2. I gave my brother all my magic cards, minus my two main decks. A Used to be type 2 Ravnica red/green beatdown, and a very fun reanimate deck. The reanimate isn't designed to be tourney good, its more or less designed for multiplayer, and my type 2 as single player. Using past and present cards to make one sided stasis situations is amazing.

Idiots left his vintage stuff. Thank God. Good collection, and 300 2600's is awesome. Someday. I made an Excel spreadsheet that lists and totals all my games by system, then the systems, my accessories, my for sale "extras", and then my wanted games. It's been a work in progress but it's nice. Also it got the blessing from my insurance agent, along with current photos I have a ready inventory in case the unimaginable happens. I'd share it with anyone who wants it. DickNixonArisen #16 Posted June 10, 2010 As noted in a number of posts, a LOT of us have spreadsheeted collections. Like maybe the majority of people here. It was one of those "Wow, I must be more of a nerd than I thought" deals, until Everybody was like "uh, yeah, me too..". I never considered using it for insurance purposes, though, and it's a great idea. Those are some nice cards! I only play casual, so I don't have to deal with a lot of the issues that other people have in MTG, as I'm seeing. I bought a pack of legends once, it was about twenty at the time. Didn't get much, but apparently the chain lightning (common) that i did get is now worth what the whole pack cost. I don't have anything more expensive than a ravager (18ish). I'm happy with that arrangement. I don't really feel like putting a ton of money into Anything right now, but if I had 40 bucks, I'd rather get ten video games than one force of will. Incidentally, my MTG is also spreadsheeted, but in a separate document from my vgame collection.

I never considered using it for insurance purposes, though, and it's a great idea. When my son started the process of replacing his games (and he had a LOT) the adjuster wanted proof of what he claimed to have, as you can guess they get a lot of fraud claims. He had his spreadsheet and recent pics showing his collection, since the list he gave and the evidence match he got the money. Sad that being honest on a claim puts you at the same level of suspicion as a thief.
DickNixonArisen #18 Posted June 10, 2010 I can imagine that at least some people who work for the insurance agency might be skeptical of the value of something that isn't widely regarded as a collectible. Or am I off-base? Maybe they know Better than the average person that an Atari game could be worth more than a new car.

Chuck D. Head #20 Posted June 11, 2010 regarding cataloguing your collection; those with iPhones should check out the Video Game Trader App. It has games for all vintage systems and you can flag the ones you have as either loose or complete or as a "want". You can then view on a seperate screen what is in your collection or your want list. It has a price guide, which is a little iffy but at least gives a comparison. I think it was either free or at the most $1.99, because as I have mentioned, i am a cheapskate. Morgan

And I just recently got 3 of the Realsports series! I still have quite a bit of commons missing. I could probalby get to 300 without a ton of cash with the right donor collector! I REALLY try to get instructions I have 261 games and 186 instructions, maybe 150 or so match up.

I'm hitting some of the local stores tomorrow to see what I can find. If there are certain commons you are looking for let me know, I can usually find 2600 commons cheap! We have a couple of local stores that really support the old systems and serious\semi-serious collectors. I seem to be a bit ADD when it comes to collecting, I switch from system to system, last time it was the NES, then I hit a bag full of 2600 carts so now I'm fixated on them.
