7800Lover #1 Posted June 9, 2010 Does anyone here remember the classic, side-scrolling beat'em-up Renegade? Released in 1986 worldwide by Taito, it was a localization of the Japanese game from the Kunio-Kun series, Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun. Renegade is similar to Double Dragon - you fight against thugs to rescue your kidnapped girl (dontcha just hate when that happens?) while their leader sits by watching. When you take out all but two or three guys, the leader will join in the fight and pound out your brains (or a reasonable fascimile thereof). I remember playing this in an arcade in Italy...one that was owned by my late uncle! It was quite a good game, but hard. I could never clear the second stage. Most people here in the US will probably recognized it more by the NES port of it. But from what I remember, that took some liberties with the arcade version. Check out this link from StrategyWiki for a comparison between this and the original Japanese version. Anyone else play this game? How far did you make it? retrorussell #2 Posted June 10, 2010 Renegade is notorious for being so damn hard.. the enemies swing their weapons so quick, and the controls/game mechanics are screwy. Throw in the fact you have ONE life (apart from getting one at 30K points) and no continues, and you're in for a world of hurt. The NES version is so much easier. schuwalker #3 Posted June 11, 2010 As a matter of fact I do....Played the crap out out of this when it first came out....My high score is around 440k. When I first played it back then I always got my tail kick on the fourth stage- the bald guys with the knifes, for those who don't know one hit = instant death! As time went on developed a pattern and incorporated the jump kick more it became easier....Too bad there was not dedicated cab for it
Crazy Climber #4 Posted June 12, 2010 This is another one I played on the NES first. Don't remember seeing it an arcade until about 5 years ago in a little dumpy Hotel in northren MN, it was not turned on at the time and I had to go so I never got to actually play it I was considering making a conversion Renegade cabinet out of some parts I have lying around since I loved the NES one but now that I hear the difficulty is insane hard I might not bother, sounds more frusterating then fun, I get enough of that feeling at work - lol

Still wish this wasn't just a kit game.
+Curious Sofa #6 Posted July 19, 2010 Renegade was always one of my favorites, and I still love it to pieces today. Just love timing the jumpkick, and performing the dash into a back-kick to take down the big Momma boss a couple of stages in. But that last stage is basically nigh impossible (at least for one of my meager skill levels), with the knife-guys and the boss with the gun. So thankfully, I found the cheat file, and semi recently was finally able to defeat the game after all these years, if unfairly. Fittingly, the ending was weak with a capital W. csgx1 #7 Posted July 27, 2010 None of the local arcades ever had Renegade in my area. Renegade for the NES was also one of my favorite games. Which is why I am a huge Kunio-kun fan as well as a huge beat-em up fan. Renegade on the Sega Master was quite good.
