N64, PSx,....what is the best USB Pad?

Recommended Posts

The stock 360 controller is about the best IMO for all around. Other than that, there are tons of PSX knockoff controllers available...though they have spotty compatibility at best. A USB to (your system here) converter would be the best option, if you can afford the cost and don't minda ll the extra parts.

I have to agree with this. I use a corded USB 360 pad with everything, and it works awesome. You can get one for like 20 bucks new on Amazon or Ebay, now that all the 360 users prefer the cordless version.

if you're on about pc usb thingies...best get one that has analog sticks as well and also a turbo/autofire option (save wearing out the butoons and also saves on a lot of thumb action)

I use a Japanese Saturn pad (the white kind) with USB connector that I got from Lik-Sang before it closed and it's great. Especially good for old style games as the d-pad is perfect.

I can't stand the 360 controller for classic gaming, as the d-pad is terrible. If you're only interested in the analog controls, I'll agree it's a solid controller.

This is my favourite!!! You can still find them all over E-Bay, but you need to be careful not to get a fake. The 'original' ones will work on the PS3 as well, while the fake ones won't. The big difference is that the fake ones break REAL easy.

Actually, me personally, I use a Madcats 360 controller. It's got a more traditional D pad, not that knobbily POS the stock pad has. Of course, many people hate madcats with a passion, so I just said 360 instead :P

Interesting. Sounds like I should check out the Madcatz controller. My issue with their controllers in the past have been the feel of the analog sticks. I doubt that has changed much over time. I would mind having one of their controllers to switch over to when wanting to play something with the d-pad.

MadCats had ample chances to redeem themselves in the past, but I can't seem to shake the feeling that they just don't ultimately care about sturdiness and offering a quality product that will last a long time. Heck, even Logitech have their lemons. When I bought a PC gamepad, I felt it better to play it safe and go with the 360 controller, even though the d-pad is indeed fairly poor.

Those Saturn USB pads on eBay look pretty sweet, but quality is all over the place, from what I've read. Gotta be careful which vendor you go for.
