super_dos_man #1 Posted June 23, 2010 At random points in time I owned these systems one at a time, I only have enough $$ to get one now. I'm leaning towards the 64, what would you recomend and why? (good games, features, etc.) thank you, Tim
Cebus Capucinis #2 Posted June 23, 2010 Dreamcast! Why?
cimerians #3 Posted June 23, 2010 It's up to you what you want to play. Look at the top 10 games for each system and ask "what do I want?" My favorite is the PS1 cause I like RPG's and horror\adventure games but I love and play the Dreamcast a lot even today. The n64 has some VERY good games too. Paper Mario etc etc. Also, it terms of systems: You can play PS1 games on a PS2 and PS3 so do you really want a PS1? The n64 is easy to find and cheap. Maybe your best choice. The Dreamcast isn't too bad either but some games can cost you. Its all in the games...
super_dos_man #4 Posted June 23, 2010 When I owned a dreamcast I only had 1 game, crazy taxi. It was pretty miserable playing that over and over lol
The_Laird #5 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Dreamcast by a mile, it has Sega games among a mostly very good library. Never liked the N64 at all and the PS1 has far too much shovelware and no soul. Edited June 23, 2010 by The_Laird
CGQuarterly #6 Posted June 23, 2010 Those are all VERY solid systems. If you are trying to choose between them, you shouldn't. I have all three and wouldn't want to give any of them up. Chris
Reaperman #7 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) of those, I'd probably say DC. It's a generation newer than ps1/n64, had some really good games, and it outputs vga with any of the advanced AV boxes. If you throw ps2 into the mix (which plays ps1 games very well and costs only slightly more than a DC) you'll get my real recommendation. It's just a better system overall. There's so much that can be done better with it. hard disks, wireless controllers and high definition. there are still games coming out for it but 'the great worldwide ps2 clearance' is about to happen, and who wants to miss that? I'm remodeling my closet to make room really there are good reasons to play all of those systems. I'd say the n64 has the 'fewest' reasons to play it though. fewer games up my alley, controller is a preference, but I didn't like it, in general the games on the system also leaned toward 'blocky.' If hard choices have to be made, I think n64 is the easiest to live without. Make sure to put it on your 'buy later' list though. pinball22 #8 Posted June 23, 2010 N64 is my favorite system ever, so I'd pick it. (Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Blast Corps, Mario Golf, Mario Kart 64, Pokemon Snap, Starfox 64, and Tetrisphere are just a few of the many reasons to have one.) Nothing wrong with the other two, though... both definitely have a lot of good stuff to play.
+save2600 #9 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) PS1, blech. I agree with The_Laird: tons of shovelware and no soul is right. Dreamcast is a compelling system with tons of great games that will keep you busy for quite a while. N64 is a great system too IMO and the fact its games are on cart really appeals to the arcade gamer in me. I'd say it's a toss up between these two systems. What you need to decide is what kind of games do you like to play and all that good stuff. Edited June 23, 2010 by save2600
Chuck D. Head #10 Posted June 23, 2010 My vote is N64. It and the Dreamcast are great, but I believe there are just more fun games for the 64. Also, if you hit garage sales and thrift stores, you will find cheap games, controllers peripherals galore for N64 and not so much for Dreamcast. I think, though, if you start looking you could get into both for very little $$ and be happy as a pig in S#!T! PS1 I could easily live without. lisalover1 #11 Posted June 23, 2010 My vote is for the Dreamcast. I had a lot of great memories with my N64, and I love all the RPGs on the PS1, but to me, the Dreamcast is the better system. It has more fun and innovative games, a great controller and memory card, and a mountain of untapped potential. The Dreamcast and the Jaguar are the two best examples of untimely console death that I can think of.
mbd30 #12 Posted June 23, 2010 The PS1 is my favorite of the three. It is the worst technologically but has the best games. I'm not sure what the "no soul" complaint means... other than that some gamers don't have as many warm fuzzy nostalgic feelings associated with Sony as they do with Atari, Nintendo and Sega. The PS1 may have a lot of "shovelware" but so doesn't the Atari 2600 and other revered consoles?
accousticguitar #13 Posted June 23, 2010 PS1! It may have some shovelware, but it also has a ton of great games.
TwinChargers #14 Posted June 23, 2010 Maybe its more of a regional thing than anything else, but I rarely see Dreamcast stuff out in the wild. PS1 and N64 is much more plentiful. The one downside with the N64, is quite a few of the controllers have worn out analog sticks. As already mentioned, if you're thinking of getting a PS1, I'd save up and get a PS2. Although with early PS1's, I believe they are built with really high quality cd players that audiophiles rave about, if that is of any interest to you. Can't really go wrong with any of them though. I'd say if your thinking about the N64, go for it but be sure to get some solid joypads too.
Koopa64 #15 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) I think all three are great, but I have only a handful of PSOne games. Ah well, at least I have Spyro 2 and 3, Suikoden II, Nightmare Creatures II and Metal Gear Solid, just to name almost all of them. EDIT: On the issue of worn out N64 sticks, there's an easy method of prevention (the only fix is to buy replacement stick modules), which is to lubricate! I finally got around to lubricating the rest of my good condition N64 controllers and they are all awesome! The gray controller I'm using right now for DK64 has been going strong and is still quite tight. Very slick and no feeling of grinding whatsoever. Just remember to re-lubricate now and then, just checking inside the control stick to see if it's still glossy or not is a big help. As for the kind of lubricant, try to find something safe on plastics. I use one that is for sewing machines and it seems relatively harmless and has been a big help with the ever so problematic sticks. cimerians #16 Posted June 23, 2010 Let's not pretend. The system has no soul and things like that are whats called fanboyisms, basically the hatred and ignorance of that "other" system. It's a little like that in sports. My team is better than yours. I know it well here in Chicago. It's beyond retarded and I grow tired of seeing it STILL to this day, I'll be 80 years old and Sega freaks will still be crying about the PS1. I've read about console wars since EG covered those like the 2600\Intelly, 5200\CV, Atari computers\Commodore, NES vs GENESIS vs SNES.....it will go on forever. I ignore it when I can. It's the games. If the games are cool then that's what you want. Doesn't damn matter how many games are on the system but which games are on it that you love to play. Didn't want to respond cause threads can be ruined by crap like this. It's inevitable though.
+save2600 #17 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Thing is with the PS... I had one once. Had a very large collection of games and such, but it got old quick and does not constitute staying power IMO. So in my case - not just a "fanboy" thing. You're absolutely correct though when you say to play the good games and screw the rest. Without going into a long diatribe on collecting, for me, I just do not care for Sony products. They made a good TV back in the Trinitron days and they continue to make a decent LCD screen. The rest of their consumer electronics though - meh. Very average/sub-par/mediocre stuff. Didn't they even make or distribute peanut butter at one time? DracIsBack #18 Posted June 23, 2010 They're all pretty dirt cheap to get these days. I'd go with all three myself. So what if the PS1 has lots of crap. Comes with having a huge library. There's also the fact that it has a lot of good games too in that vast library. I hate the "best ratio" argument. :-) Who cares if there's shovelware on NES, PS1, 2600 etc. There are so many games on those systems that you probably have more great games than you'd ever have time to play even if you removed all the crap. high voltage #19 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) PlayStation 's gotta be the number one here, it introduced CD gaming to the masses, introduced 3D gaming to the masses, took the same approach as Sega advertising, but up to the next level, and had a fantasic range of excellent titles. Of course, having the biggest gaming library always gives you loads of 'worse' games (re NES), but compare to N64, with maybe 10 - 15 good titles, and the rest just average, you'd always know what to pick where's PSX is concerned. DC is almost in the same league as PSX, lots of outstanding gaming titles, whereas N64 trailing along third. But as I said in a previous thread, you gotta play ALL the games on these three systems to judge....nobody's ever done that. Austin #20 Posted June 23, 2010 This is a tough choice.. I mean, between the PS1 and Dreamcast, anyway. PS1 had so many good games.. But the Dreamcast was simply one explosive bag of awesomeness. I can't make a decision.

Didn't want to respond cause threads can be ruined by crap like this. It's inevitable though. The PS1 has no soul at all. When you play on an Atari you playing Atari games on an Atari machine. You feel part of legacy, part of the history, you are playing games you couldn't elsewhere and you are playing on a machine that unlike any other of its generation. Same can be said of Sega and Nintendo too (although I have never liked their games) When you play on a Sony you play on a generic console, with generic games, no history and nothing that you couldn't really play elsewhere. It was the PS1 gen when gaming started to lose its soul, anything the PS1 could do a PC could do and this carried on with the PS2 and etc. Wehen you played a Dreamcast or N64 at least you knew you could play games that couldn't be found elsewhere and never would be. +thegoldenband #23 Posted June 23, 2010 I own all three -- in fact, I think they were the first three consoles I picked up when I got back into real hardware a couple years ago -- and the Dreamcast would be my choice. It's got the most capable hardware, its usefulness as an emulation platform is a big plus, and unlike the N64, it doesn't make me feel vaguely ill when I play 3D games. The PS1 would be my second choice, especially if you can get a modded system with a reliable CD drive. Those loading times get mighty tedious after a while, though, and from what I understand PS1 emulation is really quite good. Obviously the library is very deep, and there are plenty of engaging games, as well as plenty of garbage. There are some nice games on the N64, but the emphasis on a certain style of 3D gaming puts me off somewhat, and I hate the fact that the carts don't have end labels. Also, as I said above, there's something about the way it renders 3D graphics that tends to make me feel ill, at least in first-person 3D titles -- and I'm not a person who's prone to motion sickness or anything like that. On the other hand, it's got some excellent multiplayer titles. Having said that, I don't find any of these systems as compelling as the 16-bit machines (Genesis/SNES/PC Engine), but that's just me. Chickybaby #24 Posted June 23, 2010 I've nothing against Sony and have a 1&2. Have hundreds of PS1 games and have almost 200 Dreamcast - There's no contest by miles ... Dreamcast all the way. From Peripherals to quality graphics. Sports, Arcade, RPG, Fighting, Racing, Shooting... Hell, You can even go Bleemcast and play 3 PS games on yr Dreamcast, lol.
zylon #25 Posted June 23, 2010 I've owned all 3 and still onwn DC and N64. The DC is my fave of that era. It had a little bit of everything, good RPG's, action, arcade titles, SHMUP's, sports, racing, but not many FPS. The N64 I kept for FPS and sports titles. I got rid of PSX because every game I wanted to play on it, I already had on something else: DC, N64, Saturn
