+save2600 #1 Posted June 30, 2010 (edited) Have a PS2 system coming (thought I'd give the damn thing a try) and was wondering what kind of stuff a classic gamer would be into. I'm aware of the arcade legends disks, Capcom collections, etc., so LMK what you have and how much you're looking to get for 'em. Just picked up a handful of titles (including Williams Pinball collection for $2.50) from Toys 'R Us. Looks like everyone is ditching the PS2 now and prices are dirt cheap, yay! Also, can anyone recommend a really good arcade style driving game? I could care less about souping up a car, buying parts for it and all that crap. Just want a great playing, fast, highly detailed graphics and framerate experience. Edited July 14, 2010 by save2600
keilbaca #2 Posted June 30, 2010 By far my favorite racing game of all time, is Burnout 3. Its on the ps2, its arcade style racing, and its the last good burnout game to be created. They went to crap after 3. You will not be disappointed. Here's a vid of me playing Road Rage, basically its how many people you can knock out before you take too much damage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POy_vLnxgcY
stalepie #3 Posted June 30, 2010 I was really happy with Taito Legends (which I got for Rastan) and the Samurai Shodown Anthology. Also liked the Neo Geo collection (forget the exact name) which had Magician Lord on it, though some reviews of it have said the emulation is shoddy. Was SLIGHTLY disappointed with Metal Slug Anthology because of what seems to be a bit of a lag in the controller button response, but having not played the originals I cannot exactly be sure of that. It's still playable and looks and sounds great.
+save2600 #4 Posted June 30, 2010 (edited) Burnout looks sweet, thanks! BTW: I'll be playing this on my DLP projector Bummer about the Neo Geo emulation. The original Metal Slugs have super quick button responses. Never met a Neo Geo game that didn't. Their gameplay usually rocks. I always wanted to buy a racing arcade cab, mod it to work on the ps2, and play burnout 3 on it. I love my DLP projector... and burnout 3 is even better on it. Seriously, if you're looking for arcade type racing games, for the ps2, Burnout 3 is king.

Who the hell wants to shake the Wii remoteto throw bombs? Totally stupid.

RJ #8 Posted July 3, 2010 Another great PS2 racing game is OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast.
+save2600 #9 Posted July 9, 2010 Another great PS2 racing game is OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast. Cool, I'll have to check that one out too. And thanks Keilbaca - Burnout 3 is a lot of friggin' fun! The load times are lame and all this business of saving to the memory card every step of the way, but damn is it pretty slick. So far, enjoying the PS2 for the most part. I'll never fully get used to load times (absolutely abhor them), but what are you gonna do. Makes me appreciate my cartridge based systems a little more I guess. Oh and there does seem to be this slight fraction of a second "lag" when pressing buttons on the PS2 dual-shock controller. You especially notice it in the pinball games as well as some of the fighting. Baseball Stars II on that Neo*Geo disc as well Last time I felt controller response that bad was with some/most of the early SMS games. Especially Wrestling. We used to get so frustrated back in the day playing that damn game. Seemed like you needed to press the button a full second before you wanted. lol
keilbaca #10 Posted July 9, 2010 Hehe you're very welcome. The only way to get faster load times is to get HDLoader, a fat ps2, with a network adapter and a hard drive. You can load the games onto the hard drive, and play them off of the hdloader. Its not compatible with all games, but like 98% of them it is compatible, including Burnout 3. Load times are insanely fast.

I assume I can download HDloader somewhere, throw it on a USB stick and then transfer it over to a memory card via the PS2 itself. I've got a spare IDE HD here somewhere, but don't think it's a very large one. May I assume I can shove just about any HD (up to a certain limit) in there and format it using the PS2? +FujiSkunk #12 Posted July 9, 2010 (edited) You might actually want Midway Arcade Treasures 3 also, since you're looking for both old arcade games and racing games. The third volume focused on driving games, and while some are ported instead of emulated, they run pretty well. I still pop in #3 to play San Francisco Rush 2049 now and then. Otherwise, I second the vote for OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast. It's awesome feel-good racing with vibrant graphics that aren't drowned in brown, unlike many other modern games. +save2600 #13 Posted July 9, 2010 You might actually want Midway Arcade Treasures 3 also, since you're looking for both old arcade games and racing games. Got that one already Rush 2049, its stunt track and I are good like that. lol GREAT conversion of that game. STUN Runner is a total POS though. Plays waaay too fast and is not emulated properly at all. Disappointing because I did like that game. Actually, the original arcade feel, sitting on the bike and tilting back and forth is kind of what made that game special. Without it, STUN Runner is a pretty mediocre racer. +save2600 #14 Posted July 9, 2010 (edited) Okay, turns out I happened to have a 120GB Maxtor IDE drive sitting in an external Lacie enclosure, that I bought sometime back for $5 - whee! Dumped several games to the HD and they all play. But of course, the one that doesn't is Burnout 3... lol Is there something special I should be doing to get that thing to work? Why yes, yes there is. Have to hit 'select' when the game is highlighted to change its compatibility mode. Works like a charm now Edited July 10, 2010 by save2600
