600XL Supervideo

Recommended Posts

Ive just done this mod and the 600XL's video is now stone dead. Curiously no sound either. Not a peep. The machine is clearly booting and working fine in all other respects (judging by disk activity). Not having such a good day today... anyone else tried this mod?

I just completed the Quick and Easy video upgrade to my 800XL which is based on the SuperVideo upgrade. One step I forgot to jump L5 with a wire after I removed the resistor on L5. When I tested it the 800XL booted to a black screen. Perhaps the answer then for you is one of the resistors you addded or wires did not make a good connection?

I'll be doing the SupverVideo upgrade to my 600XL in a couple of weeks. So if you do not resolve it by then we can compare notes afterwards.

Hi,

I´ve done this mod several times and until now there are no problems with it. I think, there can be only 2 reasons when all parts are working fine exspect sound-output.

1. The audio amplifier LM358 doesn´t work well or it´s socket was broken (perhaps during installing the video mod)

2. On any trace of the audio signal on the 600 XL PCB there´s a shortcut or something like this.

Take a magnifier and scan the solderings points near the places you´ve done the mod. Perhaps there´s a little splash of solder over two soldering points. If you have a multimeter, make a measurement of the audio-output (PIN 3 on the DIN plug). The voltage must be change a little when pressing a key or loading from disk. If the voltage is constantly at +5 or Ground (nearly 0 Volts) then there´s a short-circuit anywhere.

Regards, Juergen

Thanks both. :) Time I learned how to use this multi-meter, then I can hopefully (at least) continuity test the whole circuit. The 600XL video circuit is a pain to work on owing to the cramped real-estate: I suspect the tracks won't survive too much work.

I'll try these suggestions and report back. :)

Success! Problem appears to have been down to a short between the luma hookup and R125 (although I'm not sure why that would matter since they appear to converge anyway). But enough pat amateur theorising... fix was down to dogged voltage testing with a working 600XL to compare with. Thanks for letting me hang on to your machine for those extra couple of days Dominic! :) I have learned a lot from this.

No worries Jon, glad you got it sorted!

Looking forward to taking delivery of the RAM 320XL plug-in from Citrad, should go nice with the 600XL!

Indeed!

S-video output is perceptibly improved by these modifications, but not dramatically so, so I wouldn't say you're missing out on much. That said, your 600XL now has chroma/luma output (as well as 64K RAM, of course) and although the AV output through the cable you say you're using is decent, it is much better through s-video. At least your 600XL is tooled up for this now if you ever get a suitable cable/TV set.

Now to put the lid back on your machine for the umpteenth time and get it parcelled up...

What is a "RAM 320XL plug-in from Citrad"? Do you have a link?

Never mind I found it.320XL
