Complete Frogger restoration

Recommended Posts

Hello

I just started my Frogger restoration, thought I would post my progress, maybe someone will think it's cool to see it done, maybe not :) I purchased a Full size Frogger recently and I think it is an excellent restoration project. Frogger art is readily available and the woodgrain sides make it so I do not have to paint much. I paid $100 for the game, it is not working currently. I also bought a mini Galaga for the same price from the same person but I sold it for $150 (not crazy about cabarets) which takes the Frogger purchase price down to $50 so I guess so far I have $50 invested in this game which is a good start. Today I invested about 2 hours of time, I tore down the front of the cabinet, removed most of the CPO residue (they really suck to take off!) and started some light sanding of the control panel...

Here is the Frogger

If you look closely, you can see evidance of the former (and official) Frogger CPO in this pic

Starting to get tired of scraping, I need to invest in a heat gun ;)

Thats as far as I am going at home, I'll take the panel to work tomorrow for a proper sanding down to the metal then primer/sand/repeat until it is smooth enough for paint

Here is a shot of the partially dis assembled cabinet

Holy effing memories, you just reminded me of the arcade games my dad used to have in the basement. I WANT THOSE BACK. We dont know much about them, but we used cow magnets to get credits...

I wonder if that still works with arcades today....icon_evil.gif I'm probably not gonna try though.

we also had Star Wars, Space Ace, some home made SNES arcade thing, and cyberball. I don't feel like typing them all. Drugs can cause you to lose loved arcade machines icon_frown.gif . Good thing he's done with that shit.

I look forward to seeing you fix this machine, looks like it will be interesting.

Today I was able to grind off all the rust at work then sand smooth with a power sander. I spent about 2.5 hours on it, applied one coat of primer. I will let that dry for 3 days then sand and put one more coat on before the paint. Waiting sucks but it gives me time to start taking stuff apart on the cabinet.

Coming along nicely! That will make a nice piece of history. You rarely see a restored frogger anymore. Keep sending updates please! :D

Thanks for the support guys :)

Hit a small set back a few hours ago. While taking apart the guts, noticed that many parts were missing (must have been "borrowed" for other games/projects) and the wiring was hacked very badly. Speaker wire was spliced in many areas (used for a patch) and the monitor was not even bolted down! I am amazed it didn't fall out during transport. There was also a strange hack job coming from the transformer that I have never seen before, looked dangerous, had fire hazard all over it and I did notice some heat burns around it. I guess I see why it didn't work now  I think the best route will be to just start from scratch and do a total rebuild of the interior also. As long as I am going that far, I am going to rebuild all the old interior wood/etc.. This might take a while but I think it will look pretty sweet when I am done, at least I hope it does :ponder:

I suppose it didn't get the "coveted" UL listing...

So, pretty much you are gutting the thing and putting it all back together and undoing all the crazy stuff going on inside? Sounds like a lot of work.
