Gyruss instructions question

Hi

 

I'm confused by the instructions to Gyruss which says:

 

Press the LEFT FIRE button on the joystick control-

ler. Then select a game option according to the

screen directions. Games 1-4 are for one player;

games 5-8 are for two players. Games 1 and 5 are

the easiest; games 4 and 8 are the most difficult.

Press the desired number to start the action.

 

Any time during the game, you may press the RIGHT

FIRE button to freeze the action. Press the LEFT FIRE

button to restart.

 

But in my game ROM, none of that is true! The number buttons do nothing, and left just starts the game. In game, both left and right fire. There is no pause option on these buttons.

 

Have I got a different version of the game?

My actual game cart (as well as running it from rom through my Atarimax cart) both work the same way that you describe. Maybe they had plans for these options but canned them (while still leaving the unedited docs in there)? Either way, I think right fire button pause would be annoying! I'd probably hit it by mistake during playing.

So....I just got this game loose. I take it there is no way to play two player? I can't seem to find the two player mode. And if I read the above comments there is no way to chose a level?
