eightbit #26 Posted July 30, 2010 As said earlier, the 130XE has much better video quality. But, I would still rather have the 800XL as the 130XE is not nearly as sturdy. Besides, the 800XL looks fantastic imho.
atariksi #27 Posted July 30, 2010 I'm "asking" myself these kind of questions some times too. It is only in theory, because I have zillions of 130XE's and 800Xl computers. When I really had to chose between a stock 800XL and a stock 130XE... and I was not allowed to upgrade anything... I would go for the 130XE. Programming assembler and debugging is really a pain-in-the-ass without the extra RAM. But it is all theory. ... What's so theoretical? You can cross-compile on another platform for large programs. atariksi #28 Posted July 30, 2010 I think they are 5V DC with 5pin DIN connector -- same as monitor connection on XL/XE so that you can fry your machine easily. I guess XEGS doesn't have the 5-pin DIN connector for monitor, so you're good to go. The XL/XE computers have a 7-pin connector for power, so there's no way you can plug it into the monitor port unless you forced it in or broke off the two upper pins. And while the XEGS lacks the monitor port that most A8s have, it does have RCA jacks for composite and audio so you can use standard cables with it. They do have those generic power supplies that use those 5-pin DIN cables. The original question of "800XL or 130XE?" resulted in OP getting XEGS and being giving incentive to get Atari 400/800. Marius #29 Posted July 30, 2010 What's so theoretical? You can cross-compile on another platform for large programs. For me it is a theoretical issue, because in 'reality' I do not have to make the choice. And when I was writing and thinking about this subject, I was thinking of ONE computer at all. So or 800XL or 130XE, and not with other platforms in mind for cross-compiling or whatsoever. I thought: what would you chose back in 1985... not now. Ok? Hehe. M. Looks like original poster was thinking past 1985.
jc78_2005 #31 Posted July 30, 2010 Okay. Looks like original poster was thinking past 1985. yep correct. for me the xegs is nostalgic. i remember seeing them in christmas catalogs etc. they where never avaliable to try hands on around here. so, there's the nostalgia factor, it is the only atari computer i have any experiance with, ,and it is limited lol. and also, it was a great deal(as long as it works), i have traded for a power supply, and a few carts. i may get a disk drive later, but to me the sio2pc is good enough, with the last one i owned, i had the sio2sd and it was cool also, but for now i mainly want to focus on carts, and maybe make a repro or 2 along the way. thanks for all the opinions and ideas guys.
