Experinces with ARAnyM

Recommended Posts

I've dabbled with the ARAnyM program a few times with a little success. Mostly dealing with my own lack of Atari ST/TOS experience and a few lock-ups.

Has anyone had more experience with ARAnyM? In particular, could one build a PC and use ARAnyM as the primary OS? It would make a fast, cheap Atari ST system if possible.

A fast answer to that would be no.

You can not watch flash movies. Webmail doesn't work very well. Can't watch dvd movies. Even regular videos will have to be converted to play them on Aniplayer. Only type of games you can play in ARAnyM are gem games, and gem games is try and error, many doesn't work, but some does. I haven't got any type of emulator to work yet. But I haven't tested that too thoroughly. Maybe some zx spectrum or atari 800 emulator will work, but not very good I would guess.

But things that does work is:

Internet:

Highwire - good for general surfing.

Cab - has support for cookies so you can log in to forums. But it crashes a lot on my system.

Links - my favourite when I need cookies support. This is what I use if I'm going to post on forums. A little slow, but has good compatibility and is stable.

Lynx - haven't got it to work. It has to do for where it is looking for its files. But I'm sure you can get it to work, but I haven't bothered.

IRC:

AtarIRC - a very good IRC client, I recommend it.

Videos:

Aniplayer - the best player you can get. It plays mp3 very well, and if you are willing to convert videos, it is a nice enough video player.

Mods:

Tetrax - is the only module player I have found which works in ARAnyM. The player is not perfect but pretty good.

Image viewer:

zView - can open a lot of type of images.

graftool - is the second best, and is good for converting images.

Smurf - is another viewer which also works.

Paint tool:

The only paint tool I have got to work is Pixart, which doesn't work all too well either.

ICQ:

AtarICQ - works really well, but I'm not an avid ICQ user.

MSN:

only option here is to use a service called bitlbee.org. You are using their servers through AtarIRC and are logging in to MSN that way. So you use AtarIRC as an MSN client. But I don't think it's very secure, so I don't use it myself.

Text editor:

QED - my favourite.

HTML editor:

JOE - very good also.

Word:

Atari Works - a simple and nice enough word processor.

Papyrus - even better as a word processor.

Spreadsheet:

Atari Works - a nice enough spreadsheet.

3D Calc - another one which is pretty good.

FTP:

aFTP - works really well.

Mail:

aMail - works, but isn't that great.

MyMail - better, I have problems getting it to work properly. Probably it's just me.

Archives:

Arcview - has support for a lot of archives.

GuiTAR - a nice shell to open tar.gz and .tgz files.

ST-Zip - works, but is outdated I think.

LHArc - Nice for extracting .lzh files.

Unzip.ttp, zip.ttp, tar.ttp, gzip.ttp, bzip2.ttp etc. - for those I often prefer hust to use the command line.

Command line:

Bash - works well.

Conholio - is a new one, which I must say I like really well.

It's probably more tihngs, but I'll leave it there. Posted in ARAnyM with Links.

Edit: For converting images I meant Smurf.

You can also open pdf files with zView.

And "aMail - works, but isn't that great." should be ...isn't so great. Sorry for my bad english.

Thanks for the very in-depth report! That gave me everything I need to know. Nothing wrong with your english either :) I couldn't tell English wasn't your native tongue, er, pen?

I know this is an old topic but try Troll for email (works with Google..)

Also try Litchi for ftp...

Try mxPlay for audio musics. Although I've never found a GEM happy player for Aranym that can play sndh music : (

I'd love to know if there's a ZX Spectrum emulator (GEM) that works under Aranym / MiNT.

Now that would be awesome!

ARanyM can be troublesome at times and the documentation is poor at best. It seems to be written with the assumption that everyone is a linux guru. Also note that if you like the good ole sound of the ST key click, it's missing, there's no YM support whatsoever. Not really good for gaming at all. ARAnyM makes a better MiNT/GEM box than anything else.

Hatari on the other hand has YM sound and can handle quite a lot of games and demos. Probably a better choice if you want to run a large range of software.
