Possibly Selling a Large MVS Collection

Recommended Posts

I have a rather large MVS collection that I'm thinking about selling. I don't get to play with them much anymore and I already have a MAME cab with all the MVS game roms in it. Having a physical MVS collection seems redundant. However I do love the way they look in their shockboxes on my shelf so I'm not 100% sure I want to sell it. Can someone give me a rough idea of what a collection like this would be worth?

The MVS system is a two board model that has been 'Consolized' with a JROK RGB board and the latest Universe BIOS. It also comes with with two controllers (a pad and the classic controller) and a PS2 controller adapter. The console also has a cool blue LED light that can be turned off and on with a switch. Here's a picture (forgive the horrible quality), it's on the bottom shelf:

All the MVS games are English labels with intact serial numbers (unless they were JPN only titles). I was really anal about the condition of the labels, so they're almost all in excellent shape. All titles also come with shockboxes and printed inserts:

Galaxy Fight

Zupapa!

I'd like to sell these as a set, but I know I can probably get more if I piecemeal them out. I might end up doing that if no one wants the 'Instant Collection'. Here's a picture that shows most of the games (sorry about the quality), but some are hidden off to the right behind the closet wall.

I don't get to play with them much anymore and I already have a MAME cab with all the MVS game roms in it. Having a physical MVS collection seems redudant.

Doesn't the legality of having the roms necessitate keeping the collection? icon_ponder.gif

I would think the law has a loop hole. If you purchased said item once and made the rom as a backup, what happens if your original item breaks? Oh, Yeah you would have the roms as a backup. Does the law state you need to destroy the rom if you no longer have the official item?

Sure. Just like I own all 4,000 arcade games whose roms are in my MAME cab... :ponder:

I would definitely jump on a few of those, if you do decide to sell.

I'll even up Horseboy's offer and say $500 for the whole set. :D

On a serious note... to anyone that is going to make an offer on this set, keep in mind that there are over $750 worth of shockboxes alone. This set is pretty silly. Incredible.

Using the Neo-Geo.com price guide as a rough estimate I came up with around $5,000 for everything. I took the middle price in the range they gave, which I think is safe because the games come with boxes and are in really nice shape. For the kits I took the high end number, which may actually be too low. The real range may be around $4,500 to $6,000. How realistic that number is I don't know.

Since I'm not forced to sell (or really motivated to), I'll probably just keep them if I don't get an offer I like.

So what's the story with MVS games with shockboxes? Were they included with MVS games from SNK, or are they always aftermarket, or somewhere in between? I thought MVS kits just came in a cardboard box.

Shockboxes were made by members of the Neo Geo community. Nothing to do with SNK/Playmore. There are a few different styles, most are black but there were some small runs of red boxes. There's a Chinese seller who also made boxes but his insert sleeve doesn't wrap around and inserts need to be cut into front, spine, and back sections.

Inserts are user made and freely downloadable from Southtown homebrew. You can download the hi-res image files or pay Southtown to print them. (They do a great job) If you don't like the inserts others have made you can design your own and submit it to the Southtown library.

@Tempest, as far as whether you should sell, you might want to just reduce your collection. Having every game in most of the SNK fighting series might be 'redundant'... maybe pick 1 or 2 favorites from each series and sell the others. Unless you really need the money dumping your legit collection to play romz is just lame. And, emulation is never 100% accurate.

Well its a fantastic collection for sure. How long did it take to acquire Tempest? Is this pretty much a complete set?

Actually it's a little over half I think. I have 98(?) titles and I think there are around 170. I've been collecting them on and off for a little over four or five years.

Great collection.

By the way does anyone know what's best place to buy a consolized Neo Geo?

No sure. Longhorn Engineer made mine, but I supplied him with the parts.

Tempest, where does one acquire the shock boxes and art work you have provided your collection with.....

New black shockboxes are $8, red shockboxes are $8.25 when they're available. Bulk lots of used shockboxes occasionally pop up on ebay or forums for less ($5-$7). Southtown prints inserts for $3 each or you can download free and print your own.

I used excel to do a 'real' average price and came up $5,700 (the actual range was $4,690 - $6,765). This include the value of the shockboxes, inserts, and the system with controllers (plus some extra misc. items).

That's an extremely impressive collection! I think it would be tough selling as a single set though.

BTW, your 32x is a little crooked ;)
