How durable is a Sega CDX?

Recommended Posts

I found one at a flea market this morning for $15 with maybe all the "hook ups". But when i was checking it over the bottom of the unit was cracked from one side to the other and it was slightly bulged so I could see some of the internals.

I passed on it, but I'm still a bit curious about how well they hold up?

I've found three over the years. One came in the original box with all the games and everything; it works fine, as I'd expect. Another I bought at a Game Crazy about three years ago that some fool had apparently traded in. It was labeled "32x", but it had the video cable (the hardest part to find). They said it was untested, but it works fine also. The third I found at the flea market on a table stacked a couple of layers deep with CD players with no cables. It came with headphones and the guy who sold it to me said it had good sound. The battery cover was cracked and I had to hold it in to demonstrate the CD player functioned. Once I got it home and fixed the battery cover, the whole thing works fine.

I'd probably try to test the CD player with batteries, and if that worked, the rest probably will as well. Even so, I would likely take a chance at $15 anyway, especially if it came with the cables. The CDX usually seems to sell for $75 or more.

I've had mine for about 16 years and have never had a problem with it! And yes, I'm one of the crazy few who used it as a portable cd player for a few years to.

$15 is a good deal considering how much they go for.

I am going to say they're extremely durable. I got lucky and found one on eBay with a $19.99 BIN within a few minutes of its listing. The guy, who obviously had no idea what it's worth in the first place, shipped it in just a bubble envelope. I fully expected it to not work, but it survived just fine. It's my primary Genesis now. I only switch to the classic when I want to play a 32X game.

I bought mine used and it had the usual wear and tear but worked fine. And like posted before it's worth it for $15. The worst that can happen is it won't work and your out $15. As far as being dropped, if it doens't work I would suspect pcb got broken. might be able to hard wire proken traces unless there's to many cracked. Good luck!

The CDX was marketed as a portable compact disc player as well as a video game console. Back then we didn't have anti-skip! So as for it being durable. I think the thing were built with enough plastic to fight a tank, but if it was dropped just right as any cd player of its time, you would get a broken one back when you picked it up...you may have made the right decision, but I would have foudn an outlet some where and plugged it in, cause you may have passed on a good deal!
