Wild Western Colecovision

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about some Arcade Games that I loved playing as a kid. Wild Western was one of them. The arcade game had 2 joysticks one for movement and one for shooting, the one shooting had a fire button on top. This always seemed like a major hurdle for porting the game.

I was thinking today, what if the keypad aimed and fired the gun in the different directions. An overlay could be made for the keypad. My idea is move your cowboy with the joystick and use the keypad for shooting in the following directions.

1 = diagonally up and to the left

2 = straight up

3 = diagonally up and to the right

4 = straight left

5 = not used for shooting

6 = straight to the right

7 = diagonally down and to the left

8 = straight down

9 = diagonally down and to the right

I think it would be really sweet if this game was ported to the ColecoVision.

That's a fun game. Doable on coleco. But i'm not sure that the idea to use the keypad for shooting is good. For me, it would be better to determine the direction of the shoot in function a the stick position and what button is fired.

That guy from Bee's Life had a ROM which he claimed was Wild Western. I don't know if it was a proof of concept or an actual game, but it still piqued my interest.

That rom was made by Opcode for an April fool day

It's only a non-playable demo

Look very nice though! :)

Think it would be easier (as far as the controls) if it used both joysticks. Joystick #1 would be for control of the cowboy on horse back and Joystick #2 would be used to shot in the direction the controller is pressed. Of course, the only way to make this setup playable would be to have the controllers installed in the Roller Controller and the selector switch on the roller controller set to joystick or you would have to rig the controllers up somehow to be comfortable and not interfere with the gameplay.

It would be pretty hard to try and control the cowboy on horseback with one hand, hold the controller with the other and then press 1 of 9 keypad buttons to fire in the needed direction (would need a third hand)... couldn't really ask anyone what their high score was, would have to ask for their low score.

And yes, the Opcode made a non-playable demo to wet everyone's appetite.

People have managed to get over a million in mousetrap and that is keypad intensive.

Yes, but in Mouse Trap you are afforded the luxury of a little time to take your hand off the control knob (the most comfortable way for me to play Mouse Trap) to press one of the color coded door keypad buttons or the one to turn into the dog while using the other hand to hold the controller. In Wild Western you would still want to control the character's movement and shoot at the same time so a dual joystick approach would be the idle setup. Think people would wear out the keypad with that your suggested setup as well. Plus the novelty of being the first dual joystick controlled game on the CV might be enticing as well.

It would be cool to see a programmer tackle this game (as well as Ripe Cord and Side Track possibly by CollectorVision) as I think the vaporware Coleco titles are the most desired by myself. If tackled, maybe the programmer could allow for either setup or possibly a setup similar to Front Line with the Super Action Controller, that way you could still make an overlay for the setup you suggested... I love all the other overlays you have made as well as your hardware modifications (and let's not forget the Mario Bros. controllers!!!).

The WW I played as a kid (which was the original Taito cabinet) had only 1 joystick. On the right-hand side it had a 8-way selector dial/knob that clicked as you rotated it. Then you pressed down the dial to shoot. Basically it was pretty much almost the exact same control scheme as Frontline (and as a matter o' fact a lot of WW were converted to Frontlines) so maybe the control scheme used for CV Frontline could be duplicated as well? :)

By the way, that 2nd joystick method in the arcade version sounds a lot easier to play :P

Perhaps my mind was playing tricks on me and it was a push down spinner. I thought I remembered a pistol grip handle with a trigger. I never saw a frontline machine in person. I looked on klov and it shows a spinner that you push down for shooting.

Ah yeah nice pic. I also forgot about the extra button on the side of the knob to "duck" in the game (I forget if this button was to the left or right of the knob). This same button was used in Front Line to throw a grenade.

Lots of stuff to translate to a port. :P

Yep! I made this my mission

Wild Western is one of them, but I want to be sure that Opcode has no intention to make it (Since he already did a demo)

I know they plan to make Wizard of Wor

Graphics has been done on those games:

I've also built roms for those to look what they would look like playing on the real hardware, they're all Alpha though, non-playable demo

Boxes for those games has also been made too

- Side Trak

- Rip Cord

- Destruction Derby

- Skiing (barely started)

- Dracula (I gave graphics to Dale Wick)

- Tunnels & Trolls

I hope to complete all those games someday

Good luck and I'll be looking forward to one day being able to finally play some of these games on the CV!

Wasn't Wild Western going to be developed but canceled. I have a difficult time figuring out what exactly was developed/proto on CV. There's no exactly a website like atariprotos.

Wild Western was advertised in Coleco's catalogs, but like other games (Spectar, Ripe Cord, Side Track, etc.) the pics were just mock-ups and there was never any further development of these titles.

A new one on me that was brought to my attention by newColeco was that the first person skiing game was an actual screenshot and not a mock-up.

In the presskit, yes, it's stated to be an actual game screen, not an artistic representation.

And Wild Western was mentioned in the presskit too, not in the catalog, if I remember correctly. ;-)

Do you have a scan of the press kit Wild Western info Daniel?
