qix_maniac #1 Posted August 11, 2010 (edited) I've been looking on ebay for a very long time, over 2 years, and I've never seen an Espial atari 8-bit cartridge for sale. Anyone here have one boxed or loose they can post images of and perhaps tell a story on how you acquired it? and how much you paid for it? I've heard it's an ultra rare find or maybe even a myth :-) Thanks in advance. Edited August 11, 2010 by qix_maniac

I mean, I've been picking up supposed rarity 9's off of eBay recently for as low as $9.99. I doubt I'm that lucky...

Rybags #6 Posted August 11, 2010 It's a pretty ordinary game at best... not worth having unless you're trying to get every cartridge ever released. I have the feeling I've got an executable of it somewhere, so it's not like the ROM is the only way to play it.

The rarity ratings may not be perfect but which titles are you referring to? -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com First off, LOVE the site. It's an invaluable reference tool for me. I'm just not sure how the rarity data is calculated. For one example, the latest title I just got was "Parallax" by London Software, disk version. It was sitting for sale for a while, and I did a BIN for $9.99. I haven't done an exhaustive survey, but it seems a LOT of titles are sitting in the 8 or 9 rarity range. Naturally, eBay availability or final sale price is NOT an accurate indicator of rarity, but it seems like the particular Atarimania rarity rating is also not necessarily an accurate reflection of what is actually available either.
www.atarimania.com #8 Posted August 11, 2010 You're right about Parallax. Actually, it seems a number of games have shown up recently that were almost impossible to find several years ago. Even saw two or three Gold Mine cartridges, a title that was considered a prototype at one time. So, yes, some ratings may be off by a unit because it would be impossible to track down all eBay auctions then fix the ratings accordingly. -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com
www.atarimania.com #9 Posted August 11, 2010 Wanted to add that rarity ratings are relative to other Atari 8-bit titles. Yes, lots of "8" and "9" games but I do think that reflects how difficult it is to find said titles. Also, a number of "9" programs probably need to be moved to "10" territory. -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com
Bill Loguidice #10 Posted August 11, 2010 That's fair, as it certainly tends to be more difficult to find Atari 8-bit titles in general anyway than it is for more popular platforms like the C-64 and Apple II.

Tempest #12 Posted August 11, 2010 Back on topic, I've seen Espial on ebay a few times. At least 3 or 4 times over the last couple of years. I think it's more common than Matterhorn, but that's not saying much. I'd definitely give it a rarity 9. Tempest

qix_maniac #14 Posted August 11, 2010 thanks everyone, great discussion! I still don't see one peron step up up and say they have an espial :-) and how they got it...anyone out there have Espial?! I'm scanning ebay daily for espial, bristles, fort apocalypse, and super zaxxon and they never show up on there. I mean bounty bob (miner2049er part 2) shows up almost weekly! I dunno about you guys but bristles or fort apocalypse is so rare i'd pay $100 for it with label in good condition, agree? thanks again to all!

www.atarimania.com #23 Posted August 12, 2010 no disk or cart version ? What makes you so sure a silver box for the cartridge version actually exists? The release with First Star Software label was only sold by Exidy for the Max-a-Flex system and I doubt the game was sent to arcade owners in that typical silver box. -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com
