Hooked on Pitfall

Recommended Posts

I am newly back to Atari after a 20+ year break. My wrist, hands, and fingers had mostly recovered from my childhood, but the injuries are coming back and pitfall is to blame. Hoping those gators heads is an art !

Question, Is Pitfall II as good ? Maybe I will pay too much and get it off eBay if it is. Well, I better go put my hands back in the bucket of ice water.

Pitfall II is superior! The graphics are pretty much the same, but the quest is much larger, and you've got perhaps the best music ever heard on the 2600. Pay whatever you have to get this game!

Whichever route you go in obtaining it, it's worth the wait, it rocks!

Man, a 20 year break and you're getting something new...a bit surreal there.

the Ghostbusters-music is much better than the Pitfall II music

It's good, though a bit PC speaker-y, and kinda shrill, too. Can't expect too much from a 2600.

David Crane was a evil person who created this game called Pitfall II and now no one wants to do anything productive :D

Just kidding by the way. Pitfall II is a lot of fun. It is certainly an improvement over the first Pitfall which itself was an excellent game. It was interesting to hear him talk about how he conceived the game in a Retro Gaming Radio interview.

For those of you who might wish to hear the interview with David Crane, visit the following website:

You will find several shows available at this site and the most recent interview with David Crane is in two parts.

I was blown away by the graphics, hugeness, and music on PII when I bought it at Target in 1984! Its a great game, but the only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have much replay value, once you finish it. I prefer the Atari 5200 (and I believe Colecovision) versions, since they continue on to a second level, once you find Rhonda, Quickclaw, and the Rat.

Pitfall II is in my opinion one of Atari's best games (if not THE best). If you like or love Pitfall!, you simply MUST have Pitfall II.

MaxSpeed, I am currently out of extra copies, but I think I can get ahold of a copy for you for around $5. If you are interested, let me know and I'll track it down.

Anyone have the pitfall 2 rom, I have a copy but it must be corrupt as Stella X keeps crashing on it.

my email is [email protected] - Thanks !

I don't think the ROM is corrupt. Unfortunately, because of Pitfall II's custom in-the-cartridge sound chip, the game just doesn't seem to work on emulators.

On the debate over whether Pitfall II is better than the original Pitfall!, I'm not so sure. Pitfall II is certainly EASIER than the original, in the sense that you essentially have infinite lives. I have never gotten more than halfway through the original in 20 years of off-and-on trying, but I completed Pitfall II on the FIRST DAY that I gave it serious effort. (That of course was earlier this year, because I just got the game!)

I guess I would say I do think Pitfall II is more fun than the original, just because it has more variety. And it's really just kind of amazing that a game like this could exist on the 2600. (Of course, it could only come from Activision, and only from David Crane.)

Pitfall is SUPER challenging to complete without losing any lives or tweaking those logs! So far my best game is 114,000 with no lives lost and 00:50 secs left. I once completed the game with 01:04 left but I tripped on a log knocking my score down to 113,995 :x

Pitfall II is a blast and one of Activisions best but not nearly as challenging as the first Pitfall! I'm still searching for the 5200 version, I've never seen the extended maze.

Am I the only one who never really cared for the first Pitfall! but immensely enjoyed Super Pitfall on the NES?

P2 rocks them all, though.

I think Pitfall II has fits with Stella. I think you need to use Z26 to be able to play it. I think someone mentioned that the latest version of Stella can now play Pitfall II but I have not verified this.

Nah, even when it was brand friggin new, aside from the initial "wow" factor associated with Pitfall, once I played it for a while, I realized that I didn't care much for it. Perhaps it was the timed game mechanic but in retrospect, it just seemed too anticlimactic to me.

The 10K version of Pitfall II works on Z26. The 8K version does crash it, however.

I think that I fall into the definite minority in the great Pitfall debate. I’ve NEVER completed Pitfall II because I always get so frustrated with it that I end up throwing the power switch in disgust with the game half completed. The original, however, remains one of my favorite games (almost) 20 years after I first got it.

Personally, I love it. And as for beating the game, it's not a problem. My ultimate goal though is to tape and submit a game to Twin Galaxies of a perfect score on Pitfall II. I've already proven to myself I can get as high as 104,000 without making a single mistake, so it's only a matter of time. :D

I kind of liked Pitfall I. It's a decent game, playable, and somewhat fun. I never owned it. It was just one of those games I never got around to begging for at the time.

I did get around to begging for Pitfall II, though. I remember harrassing my aunt for it one fine day in Target. She popped for the $25 cartridge (I think that was how much it was), and I thought I was a happy camper.

I have to admit that after the begging got me my prize I never really liked it much. In one aspect, it was ludicrously easy. After all, you never died and the only challenge was memorizing the location of all the treasures. The music grated on my nerves horribly. Plus, I've never been one that really likes the games where you goal is to roam everywhere and explore all the pixels (Adventure being a notable exception). Add to the fact that the level design was a massive gauntlet of slow tedium, and I just didn't find it very fun.

About the only challenge to the game was to get through it with a perfect score. I never accomplished that. I'd always screw up somewhere on the way up that long tower toward the cat and get tapped by one of the vulture things.

Another problem is that it took a long time to play.

In the end, I played it a lot because it was the last video game that I was able to weasel my family into buying me for some time. I figured that I might as well get some enjoyment out of it. And the goal of a perfect score was a goal that I pursued with some regularity because of its maddening elusiveness. I particularly remember long afternoons of playing in anticipation of watching Knight Rider later on. :)
