Dumbest thing you've heard people say about games/systems

Recommended Posts

Without a doubt, the classic line of "video game systems destroy TVs in some way". Nothing gets me more irritated than that. What kind of retarded, arrogant and misinformed idiot do you have to be to think that?

Actually, I think most people who said that line were defending their unhealthy amount of football/soaps/TV viewings by claiming video games were worse. This is why I tend to keep gaming to myself and never mention it around my distant relatives....

We'll somehow it can be true. With older tv/monitors or even the early plasma screens of now, a screen can burn in if a single game screen stays on screen for a LONG, LONG periode without any movement. Like backgrounds or single screen games of the early systems. But with todays hardware and fast past gaming it isn't a issue.

I think they used to give that stupid line for early camcorders too. "ohh...don't point it at the TV, it'll explode :o " I think a video camera and a TV was probably the earliest music video too :P

"128-bit system" - this is getting ridiculous. I seriously doubt there's an objective reason for assigning this number, people just like to double it every arbitrarily defined "generation". Lets drop the whole "2^n bit" thing and count by 1s. Leave "bit" to mean an actual bit.

===================

I get your point, but there is a reason they use 2^n and that is either the CPU/GPU itself has 2^n bits of registers or it is the size of the data path on the bus. That is supposed to mean it is faster (since it can supposedly process more data at once and push it on the bus faster), but to be honest, there are a lot of other factors that lead to the overall speed of a machine.

I agree that in the past the term has sometimes had some technical basis, but I don't think that's the case anymore.

I think most of the people who use this terminology on modern machines just don't know what they're saying.

Among those who do, I'm sure if they look hard enough, they can find something, somewhere, to justify calling it a "128-bit" or "256-bit" or whatever system. But honestly, they're just grasping for any excuse they can find to make the number double. If they can't justify it by the size of the data bus, then they'll start looking at the size of rarely used special-purpose registers (like the SSE registers on an intel P3, for example), and if that doesn't work, look for the width between the GPU and the graphics memory, and if that doesn't work...

Back in the days of 8-bit vs 16-bit machines, the term was relatively meaningful, although not precisely defined. Unfortunately that transition set a pattern in people's minds that the "bitness" of each generation of systems is supposed to double, and so it's been twisted into a loosely rationalized "Generation ID code".

And TV shows don't burn into TVs at all? That's funny. Every channel has a watermark and that can definitely burn into the TV. Channels such as the Weather Network (well, in Canada anyways) has lots of still graphics that barely change for long periods of time, that also has a large chance of leaving a burn-in.

Still, I find real burn-in to be very rare. Typically with CRTs, you only find it on Arcade cabinets. For Plasma, most people confuse it's screen retention side effect with real burn-in. Screen retention is mild and goes away when the TV is turned off or something else is displayed on the TV. And yes, Plasmas can retain TV images as well.

Yep every image that is display long enough on the older tvs can cause burn in. Especially network logos.

I’ve seen some one post on a forum blame the Xbox on the downfall of the Dreamcast.

People who jump on the “I hate this game/game series bandwagon”, and rag on and on about it when ever possible. By the look of such posts see they have only played such a game (if at all) 30 minutes tops.

People who hate a console based on the fact they don’t like the more popular exclusives available for it.

I’ve seen all of this from people who seem like “educated” gamers on various forums.

Or from other less educated gamers.

“Those graphics suck now; I can’t believe I liked playing that 5 years ago” or some stupid variation of that.

Misuses of the word "bit".

Yeah, that bugs me too. But what irks me more than people "adding" bits to systems is when they REMOVE bits from systems.

Take this speck of logic: The NES is an 8-bit system, so "obviously" any game system that came before it MUST have fewer bits! So that means that the Atari 2600 is really a 4-bit system! Grrr.... :x

TolstoyKafkaEvsky's Atari Jaguar review.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-ykMhv51UI

This?

I think he confused a Saturn with a 32X, he sucks at Tempest, thinks Wolfenstien 3D was released for Genesis, and doesn't understand the difference between a cartridge and a CD. This kid is annoying. I want to punch him in the balls. This kid is completely uninformed and flat out wrong at multiple points and keeps repeating misinformation over and over... I can go on and on while I'm watching this. This shit gets 100,000+ hits? Unbelievable. Jaguar is one of my top five least favorite consoles, and I can't even stand this.

Every one of his reviews makes me cry a little bit.

I remember debating with this guy on the Jaguar and he actually had the nerve to call me an "Atari fanboy" when I defended the Jag. I see he's disabled comments now, very nice...

I noticed that, kind of funny.

Never seen that guy's videos before, but I watched a few minutes of his Saturn "review" and had to shut it off. I've never even touched a Saturn and can tell he's an idiot. I doubt he even hooked it up before recording that.

Judging by his profile info, he apparently considers himself an elite intellectual. He'll probably go into politics. That's one business where you can go far by lecturing everyone on things you know nothing about.

Meh, it wasn't that bad. I can't speak for any of his other reviews, but that one was ok. Yes, he made some factual errors and didn't give some of the games enough of a chance, but I still felt that he was expressing a genuine opinion. I could definitely understand his point of view.

BTW, gdement, that line about politics being the only business where you can get away with lecturing people about things you know nothing about? That is universal truth.

Anyway, my big pet peeve is console fanboyism to the point of obnoxiousness. You know, where a person refuses to accept that their favorite console's rivals did anything right. I've seen a lot of people make completely baseless accusations against the Sega Genesis because they are an SNES fanboy. Things like:

"Genesis games are all flash and no substance."

My answer: Have you even played any of the games? Some of them are masterpieces that were never available on any other console at the time. One example: Gunstar Heroes is definitely one of the most interesting, creative, and fun "run and gun" games of all time.

"The SNES is more advanced in every way."

Answer: I suppose that's why Earthworm Jim and Toy Story have more levels and features in the Genesis version.

"The Genesis had a bunch of add-ons that failed so badly that it killed the original system."

Answer: The Sega CD is greatly underrated. Some of the best games of the era were for it, like Snatcher, Sonic CD, Lunar, Popful Mail, etc. And it actually sold decently.

"Genesis has no good and original RPG's."

Answer: SNES may have more RPGs that Genesis, and a lot of them are definitely classics of the genre, but that doesn't mean that the Genesis was worthless for RPG fans. Phantasy Star was doing Sci-Fi RPGs and permanently killing off party members before the end of the game LONG before Final Fantasy VII made those ideas mainstream. Super Hydlide fixes most of the mistakes made by the original NES game. Shining Force was one of the Strategy RPGs that made the genre popular. Lunar (for the Sega CD) was a big step for everything we love about RPGs today.

That doesn't mean that I'm a Sega fanboy, I love both the SNES and Sega Genesis. The SNES has a lot of fantastic games, like Actraiser, Starfox, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, and many more. Yes, I grew up with a Genesis, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate its competition. And besides, there are many horrible things said about the SNES by Sega fans.

What brought this issue to the surface for me was an article on an upcoming homebrew RPG for the Genesis, Pier Solar. I was reading an article on it at Destructoid, and I was appalled at the comments, where it seemed more that half of them were either:

"When's it coming out on SNES?"

or what really made me shake my head in disbelief, comments that were kinda like this:

"How DARE they make this game for Genesis! SNES 4 LIFE!!!!!11111"

Seriously, it was like that. I think they're just mad that the Genny is finally getting an RPG that they're jealous of, and now their "no good RPGs" argument doesn't hold any water.

Seriously, any gamer who is so obsessed with a classic console that they hate its competition this much, has issues. :P

You mean, how it sounds kinda like you totally hate the SNES, or you sure wrote a novel about how the Genesis is better :ponder:

There's no need to get nasty. I already said that I appreciate the SNES as well. If I had written a counterpoint about why the SNES kicks ass, I'd still be writing that first post.

I was just using the Sega/Nintendo thing as an example of how idiotic fanboy rants are. I admit I do have a certain emotional bias towards Sega, but I have noticed a lot more Nintendo fans bashing Sega than vice-versa lately.

Besides, it's just one part of a much larger issue. People are still acting like toddlers over what systems are better than others today.

A while after I posted that, I thought that last sentence made my post sound more harsh than it needed to be. I wanted to edit it out, but it was too late.

But I do believe that about politics in general.

In regards to TolstoyKafkaEvsky, he makes his videos solely to share his opinions. He knows nothing about the system, but that just means he has less of a biased opinion. He judges it based on what he plays, and what he thinks, not something someone else said.

His reviews get facts wrong, but those aren't really important. Is it important when the Jaguar was released? No. Is it important that it is/isn't 64 bit? No.

But, based on his comments, do you think he gave the games much playtime at all? I don't. Human error is one thing, but if you're going to state something as fact and you are wrong about it, that's significant.

And disabling comments is just plain douchey. If you can't stand a little backfire, don't make videos.

Maybe he shouldn't turn of comments, but i hate to say that a lot of people even can't give a positive feedback to him about how to make better video's. I mean look at the comment some people write at news articles, wishing that that cop was hit because all cops are bad, or similar things. Looks like a lot of people can't behave online, guess that if they where sitting next to the same person they wouldn't dare to say the same things.

That's a good point, there are scores of keyboard warriors out there, and while I wouldn't class someone attempting to correct factual mistakes as being one, the fact remains that a lot of people seem to think they can say whatever they like online, things they wouldn't have the guts to say directly to someones face...
