tz101 #1 Posted August 19, 2010 I have actually built quite an extensive PSX game and system collection without ever intending to. The games and spare systems/controllers can be had all the time at thrifts all around me. So, I guess I am wondering if anyone collects large quantities of PSX stuff, and if there will be any future value in any of it. Some of it seems so common, I am wondering if the market is simply over-saturated.
Nesbroslash #3 Posted August 19, 2010 It has Heart of Darkness, man! HEART OF FREAKING DARKNESS!!!! FYI, that is another game by Eric Chahi who made Another World/Out of This World, which is a VERY good game. There are so many great games you'll miss if you get rid of all your PSX stuff! goldenegg #5 Posted August 19, 2010 I've recently started getting in to PSX. For now, I've been using the PCSX emulator (with original games). I want to get a modded PSOne, but haven't been able to find an NTSC model out here in Hong Kong for the past month I've been looking.

Oh, I am not getting rid of any of it anytime soon, despite the chuckling from laird. I currently have about 70 games and four consoles, plus various controllers and a racing wheel. Being a fan of racers, the wheel/pedals set is exceptionally awesome with the Ridge Racer series.
james82 #7 Posted August 19, 2010 i just restarted collecting and i think the psx is a top 5 console tony hawk series is well worth having as well
stalepie #8 Posted August 19, 2010 I think of the first two Playstation consoles as some of the greatest. 3D really left its mark when the PS1 arrived. But if you are talking about just pure collecting (that is for monetary and rarity value) it's true that the PS1 is not especially known for this. Of course, it is still a somewhat recent system. However there are a few games which are uncommon. Persona 1 (U.S.) tends to fetch high prices, as does Tactics Ogre. Some other RPGs such as Kartia and Vanguard Bandits go for high prices. Look out for RPGs especially, and games released by Atlus.
hex65000 #9 Posted August 19, 2010 Is it worth collecting for the PS1/PS2? Oh yeah. I'm not a big fan of many things Sony does, but I cannot knock the fact that the library is so mind-numbingly huge that if you can't find something that floats your boat, I'd be inclined to say that you need a new hobby. My collection has pumped up in spurts, but I'm still finding things that I've never seen before. Also, what's nice is that some titles have made it to become revised updates that are a bit more accessible. Especially RPGs. Mind you, there is a lot of CRAPware on the PS1/2 as well. There have been titles that were so annoying to play that I was thankful that I didn't pay much for that muffler (game). Phix was perhaps the first true offender for me. Also, the 3d hasn't aged that well, but you kinda saw that coming on the PS1. Hex. [ To pull up or not to pull up, only time will tell. ]
madhatter667 #10 Posted August 19, 2010 In a word "YES!" The PSX in my opinion was THE console to have back in the day. There are a lot of really good games for it. You have the original Resident Evil series, which was kind of a big deal when they came out. Silent Hill is timeless. The first two titles in the Legacy of Kain series is on it (which are the best of the series), a bunch of RPG games that are highly regarded, decent race titles... I figure that anyone can find a game/genre they like on the console. It gets a little harder if you are collecting peripheral hardware, or going for Dev units... but they can be had. Collecting authentic prototypes can be difficult, but some of the more infamous ones are out there as ISOs, if you just want to try them out for grins (if you have a debug unit... some of them won't run on a modded unit). It's relatively inexpensive to collect for, though you can no longer find the games cheap through the mainstream outlets, but I have found that some of the smaller shops, and occasioanlly pawn shops have a fair selection. Of course, there are always some of the more rare titles that you will have to hunt for, but that is part of the challenge of collecting, even within limitations that you may have set for yourself. I don't know anyone who has a complete PSX library, and frankly, there's enough shovelware out there, that unless you are die hard, dead set on having a complete collection, you likely wouldn't want in there anyway. Lol.
Video #11 Posted August 19, 2010 (edited) Right now is probably the best time to get into PSX collecting. Everybody is dumping their old shit, so it's easy to have for cheap. Granted, 20 years down the road, PSX may be the Genesis of today (still not worth jack) Though it could become valuable, who knows? Just collect it for what you like, and then, even if it's never worth a dime, it's still fun to have. If your just looking for something to collect, and don't really care about playing, just look at what is currently valuable for it....most of it will only hold value or go up. +pboland #12 Posted August 19, 2010 (edited) I have actually built quite an extensive PSX game and system collection without ever intending to. So, I guess I am wondering if anyone collects large quantities of PSX stuff, and if there will be any future value in any of it. Some of it seems so common, I am wondering if the market is simply over-saturated. I say yes. Here's why: Back in the mid to late 90's I started collecting what we call classic video game stuff today back then people called it junk. I use to pick up 2600, 5200, coleco, INTV, vetrex, C64, OD2, and atari 8-bit carts for $0.25 each (yes you are reading that correctly). Systems were anywhere from $3-10.00 each (with controllers, power supply, and tv hookup all included). Why am I telling you this? Because right now is the best time to buy not only PSX stuff but Genny, SNES, N64, Saturn and Game Boy stuff. Right now a lot (not all) people consider this stuff junk so the prices are really low. In ten years it will be a different story. Heck, I'm already starting to see the old "Back in the day" talk for the PSX which I thought I would never see. Maybe I'm getting old. cimerians #13 Posted August 19, 2010 I say yes, its got some really rare gems and sought after stuff. Especially RPG's. It was huge in the mid to late 90's. I still have a lot of the old late 1990's PSM magazines too which I doubt will be worth much but I'm hanging on to those anyway. The long black boxes from early PSX games are sometimes sought after. Check out Suikoden II and some other games...still going for 50+ bucks Still I think the PS3 with the PS1 classics download feature has hurt the PSX collectors out there. Austin #17 Posted August 20, 2010 Certain fighting games, plenty of shmups and role playing games still (and probably always will) fetch a nice chunk of change compared to your common mainstream titles. They did ten years ago, and they still do now, some still going up in price. In other words, there are plenty of "collectible" titles, many of them being pretty damn-fine games as well. Classic Pac #18 Posted August 20, 2010 If you think your going to make a lot of money collecting PSX games. Unless they are factory sealed you might as well as forget it. I collect PSX games and etc. simply because I love both the games and the system in fact I bought a early model PSX just so I can use my external mod chip for the games I downloaded. But that has not stopped me from buying both games and demos as I am always looking for a fair price deal. Would you happen to have the manual for the PSX controller the Barracuda? akator #19 Posted August 20, 2010 I think the best time to start a PS1 collection was around 2003. Everyone was dumping PS1 stuff for the PS2 and Xbox. Games people are talking about as being so expensive now, like FF7 and Persona, were no more than $10 CIB. By 2007 I saw those same games selling for several times more. Likewise, now would be a good time to start collecting for last generation...
Video #20 Posted August 20, 2010 Likewise, now would be a good time to start collecting for last generation... That's a good one right there, This generation is always the best time to collect last generations games, cause their not old enough for the nostalgia factor, but their not new enough to be....well....new. doubleminor #21 Posted August 20, 2010 Definitely. One of my favorite consoles to play and collect for. Probably the crown jewel of my collection is Suikoden II.
Classic Pac #22 Posted August 21, 2010 I think the PSX has some really GREAT games, I think their percentage of good games vs. lousy ones is fair higher than any other console period.
+Gemintronic #23 Posted August 21, 2010 (edited) I think PS1 is where modern gaming starts. Gobs of storage. 3D graphics. More "adult" themes. It's the easiest to rip too. I could imagine collecting so I could rip every game to a dedicated PC and play Gran Turisimo 2, Tekken 3 and Final Fantasy 9 at leisure. mattyg #24 Posted August 22, 2010 Always get confused when people refer to the PS as PSX. Whilst Sony of America wanted to go with the production name PSX because they felt Playstation was not masculine enough , Sony Japan never allowed it. A PSX is actually a PS2 with a hard drive video recorder that only saw release in Japan.
