Coloring a cart?

Recommended Posts

Say if one wanted to turn a cart nice and white, would it be possible to use bleach to make it white? Or would you need to use a paint that bonds to plastic like krylon fusion?

You'd need a good plastic paint or dye. But now you've made me wonder what it would come out looking like if you threw a cart shell into a bucket of bleach... *considers sacrificing a Combat to find out*.

Hmm if you do it throw up a pic :).

I'd say krylon fusion would work well to paint a cart and not flake off. I figure if I ever do release a cart, I would like to make 1 or a few special, for say the first x# of buyers or the first buyer.

While I doubt bleaching a cart would turn it white, I am interested in seeing what actually does happen... I figure the caustic bleach would warp the plastic somehow. I wonder if using some high-concentration hydrogen peroxide would be better.

The bleach would indeed corrode the plastic if left in for too long, probably making the plastic very weak or warped like you said. Not sure if peroxide would work....

Most likely the bleach will deteriorate the plastic. My wife bleached sneakers one time a little bit too long and they literally fell apart.

Use Bleach and Ammonia!

Please don't!

I clean all my console cases using bleach. Soak them in it for a couple of hours. Come up sweet! They do not change colour unfortunately.

Krylon Fusion does not work with carts. The paint never adheres and the carts are perpetually tacky. Ironically a 99 cent WalMart standard rattle can does better, which even that does not work, but at least it works *better*.

Hmmm Any suggestions other than fusion?

It's really weird because you would think Krylon Fusion WOULD work. It SHOULD work for all intents and purposes.

Here's the good stuff:

Go to O'Reilly auto and get either penetrating dye or vinyl and fabric dye. That stuff doesn't just sit on top, it actually bonds with the carts. Works wonders but it's pretty spendy, expect to pay a minimum of $7 a can. A full can can do approximately 60 carts on all sides.

Hopefully ax will be able to chime in, he gets stuff from Canada that works even better than the O'Reilly stuff I use. I'll ask him.

For white on official 2600 carts I'd go with primer for plastics ONLY. This will look very good and give a lasting durable, but dull white that looks like the cart was originally that color. This wouldn't be great on flat plastics, but on the textured grain of the original 2600 carts, fabu! :lust:

Expect to pay $7 - $12 a can at your Lowes or Home Depot. The auto dyes are nice too but run $20ish (per can) in white from the Canadian place and WON'T look as good.

Just a thought, I don't paint my carts ...

But what if you sanded the cart with a rough sandpaper to give the paint something to adhere to?

Works well for label surfaces, but the problem with the textured plastic is that the sanding won't get the entire surface. Well, it would if you sanded the crap out of it, but then the cart will look like crap no matter what you do.
