Is there anything in modern/classic gaming that blew your brains out?

Recommended Posts

Shenmue.

That game could pass off as a Ps3 game nowadays.

I don't know about the ps3 part, but I would agree with you about Shenmue otherwise. I found myself amazed with the game as I played through it back in 2003 for the first time.

And I'd be amazed with it again this year if I could ever get the darned disc to work longer than a single map.

Well hey, look at some of the titles today. Sure, it could use a LITTLE tweaking (REMOVAL OF THE GOD DAMNED TIMER) and bam. Good as new. Also, maybe the graphics fall behind, but Mafia 2 has gotten some pretty bad reviews, but has gotten praised on the graphics, no so much as gameplay.

EDIT: As is, it could pass off as a Wii game :P

Graphically, no. On a modern console (even the Wii), the original Shenmue could stand a graphical shot in the arm. But content-wise, it's fine. I am in agreement with your other post, however: Let's remove that whole timer business.

Finally getting to try the Wii for the very first time was almost magical...

Amazing moments or moments that really impressed me for life:

- First time playing God of War on the PS2

- First time playing Ninja Gaiden Black on the original Xbox.

- First time playing a Wii

- Soul Calibur on Dreamcast

- Final Fantasy VII

- Diablo

- Doom

- Metroid

- Ultima IV

- Donkey Kong on Colecovision.

- Buying an Atari 2600 and playing Space Invaders and later getting Adventure's secret easter egg.

Oh, and the first time I played Tunnel B1. Enough said.

Some I can remember here quick:

First turning on the Atari Jaguar, hearing the tune, seeing the logo and then hearing her roar. And then playing Tempest 2000.

First time I ever saw Cruisin' USA (the deluxe arcade where you sat in the car) and then Killer Instinct. Cruisin' simply rocked graphically and aurally.

Dreamcast definitely kicked ass universally for a console. I agree with all sentiments above, but Shenmue is not my type of game.

Demolition Derby & Rush 2049 (stunt track) are two driving games that even today, for various reasons, continue to impress.

Contra III, Super Mario IV, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Street Fighter II, R-Type, Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger for SNES. Wow. Castlevania IV didn't impress as much as these, but came damn close.

Tetris for NES.

Utopia on Intellivision. At first sight all those years ago, I was intrigued and then quickly became smitten.

Dune II for Amiga, PC, Genesis.

Elite: Frontier II for Amiga.

Armageddon for Amiga.

Defender of the Crown, The Three Stooges, Sinbad - just about any Cinemaware game for Amiga.

AvP for Jaguar and then the PeeCee.

Battlesphere for Jaguar.

Donkey Kong for Colecovision.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for N64.

Duke Nuke'm for Sega Saturn.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron for Gamecube.

Congo Bongo & Return to Pirates Isle for TI-99/4A.

Ms. Pac-Man & Midnight Magic for Atari 2600.

...there's more, but these quickly come to mind.

Yet another one. The first time I played Outrun 2 SP in the arcades blew me away. The scenery was done so good, and I was almost distracted by it.

Defender and Robotron: 2084 on Nintendo 64. I had no idea an arcade game could be so completely awesome until then.

Wii Sports on Wii. 'nuff said.

Half Life 2 on Xbox 360. Those graphics were so amazing.

Sonic Advance on GBA. I had been playing GBC all my life until then.

Bill & Ted on Lynx. Who knew a 1989 portable could produce such incredibly catchy music?

Rayman on GBC. I was used to portable games being somewhat plain at the time, so Rayman's charm won me over.

Doom on PC. I was completely astounded by this game.

Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis. This is what sparked my Sonic fanboyism.

Final Fantasy XIII on PS3. Never seen it in person, but the screenshots look so amazing...

Darius arcade version in 1986. When I walked in to Aladdin's Castle and saw the three-screen space shooter, my jaw dropped. No shooter ever compared to its beauty. I don't think any console translations ever did it justice because of the single-screen setup.

Donkey Kong Country on SNES. When I saw it demo'd at Toys 'R' Us, I was in disbelief that 16-bit graphics could be that good.

The first time i ever played a game: Dig Dug in like 1993 or 1994 at some pizza place a couple towns over.

Super Mario Brothers 3.

The first time I saw Super Mario 64.

The first time I played Doom.

The first time I played Goldeneye's multiplayer.

The frenzy that was the PS2's launch was pretty insane.

The Backlash at Grand Theft Auto III maybe?
