T2KFREEKER #1 Posted September 5, 2010 (edited) Hello all. Been a VERY long time since I have posted in the general areas of Atari Age. Well, the system has been seeing quite a bit of play lately. Had it and the C64 hooked up lately. I have tracked down some games too I had been meaning to get as well as having a few games fall into my lap I had never thought of getting. One was "Entombed" by US Games. I can say that I have never honestly heard anyone talk about the game. I am grooving on it too. My question is what you all think of the game and are there any other well put together games from US games I need to be looking at? I was quite caught off guard by this game as it is quite well put together and had never really heard anything good about US Games as a publisher. I guess I need to take some more gambles on games I have never heard of before? Edited September 5, 2010 by T2KFREEKER
yuppicide #2 Posted September 6, 2010 This was one of my favorite games as a kid. I don't recall if I had the game or borrowed it for a really long time.. I'm pretty sure I owned it. I'm not as good as I used to be at it.. maybe it's the whole computer emulation crap.
Miss 2600 #3 Posted September 6, 2010 I have Entombed but never really played it much. I'm going to have to dig it out. As to other US Games, I've been playing a lot of Squeeze Box lately because it is part of this week's High Score Challenge. There's not much to the game, but it is fun and unique and I like the graphics. I remember liking Towering Inferno and Commando Raid. I also remember being excited about getting Sneak N Peek for its unique hide and sneak concept, but I think I was disappointed in it. It has "Vidtec" on it, but it is still US Games. Gopher is a cute game.
Christophero Sly #4 Posted September 6, 2010 If only you didn't hung up on the walls so easily, Entombed would be a top-10 game for me. Gopher is an underrated game from the same publisher. It's a good test of reflexes, requiring intense focus and even a bit of strategy. Once it gets going, it can get pretty hectic. If the label read "Activison", instead of US Games, no one would bat an eye.
sandmountainslim #5 Posted September 6, 2010 Never heard of Entombed until you mentioned it so I fired it up on Stella and gave it a go. Good game! I liked it so well I put it in my favorites folder. Wp
StanJr #6 Posted September 6, 2010 Big love for Entombed. Back before TG went to shit and started deleting records for no reason, I was the world record holder on the game (with a score of 311). Entombed is totally a "zone" game where the maze actually slows down in your mind when you really get rolling. Getting hung up on the walls is not fun and rolling the make/break counter is not fun (especially when you really needed those 98 MB's!!!) Enjoy! T2KFREEKER #7 Posted September 6, 2010 Hmm, cool that I got someone who hadn't played the game to give it a go too. I really do like it. Very different for what it is. Not to say that there aren't any other maze games on the 2600, but there is just something very different here. I need to check out some of those other titles mentioned too. I do have Commando Raid and Towering Inferno though. Cool stuff as I didn't really pay attention to the fact that those were also made by US Games. Cliff Friedel #8 Posted September 7, 2010 If only you didn't hung up on the walls so easily, Entombed would be a top-10 game for me. Gopher is an underrated game from the same publisher. If the label read "Activison", instead of US Games, no one would bat an eye. I played this today via the Harmony cart and I ran into the same problem that you did. To me, it just seems like you bang off of the walls way too much. That made it a little frustrating to me. Even with that though, I still ended up playing a few games to see how far I could get. SpaceDice2010 #9 Posted September 7, 2010 Entombed is imho a HORRIBLE game! I liked MAD from Vidtech/Usgames. An interesting title from Vidtech/Usgames is Space Jockey. It is actually the first game I "wrapped" and was designed buy Garry Kitchen as a goal to "reverse engineer" the Atari 2600. lol. Like anyone really needed to do that. Skylark68 #10 Posted September 7, 2010 I like most of the US Games/Vidtec offerings. I don't have Entombed, but I'll have to find it. I always enjoyed Towering Inferno, Commando Raid, Word Zapper, Space Jockey, and Sneak N Peek (with 2 players). Space Jockey and Word Zapper in particular get a lot of hate for some reason, but with some of the game variations, they both can be quite challenging. Word Zapper with the random letters (instead of simple words) can be very difficult and satisfying to beat. The Doomsday enemy can be very terrifying during some heated play. Rex Dart #11 Posted September 8, 2010 The controls make it pretty unplayable for me, and the graphics (ARE those graphics?) don't do it any favors either.
S1500 #12 Posted September 8, 2010 I still have no idea why I bought a loose Entombed for 10 dollars.
Recycled #13 Posted September 8, 2010 Entombed is great. Big challenge, big fun, but also, unfortunately, big hand cramps. Nice hidden gem.
Crazy Climber #14 Posted September 8, 2010 If only you didn't hung up on the walls so easily, Entombed would be a top-10 game for me. Same here, getting caught on the walls was a deal breaker for me. Just got too annoying
T2KFREEKER #15 Posted September 9, 2010 The game gets insane when it gets faster. That's about the time I am getting a littie irritated with the walls. However, it still isn't that bad.
Godzilla #16 Posted September 9, 2010 I've always been an entombed evangelist. Though, I do think the game is best enjoyed with a mate. It's instantly co-op or competitive, however you want it and is great fun at it. Great fast zone game, too.
Stan #17 Posted September 12, 2010 I think it's a very underrated little game. The upper levels are a real challenge. It's not very intuitive (at least the wall gap thing), but when you get the hang of it it's a lot of fun. Short blurbs about their other titles in no particular order: Raft Rider: I like this game. It's weird, but it has a charm to it when you learn how to move and capture the gold nuggets. Trick is to learn to not always use full strokes, but learn how to stop short. Gopher: Interesting title. It's easy to max out points by leaving one carrot and just taking out the gopher as it comes up, but it's still a pretty cool game. Picnic: Most people probably hate this game. I really can't give a reason why I like it. Piece O' Cake: Also underrated in my opinion. The controls feel a little shaky, but it's actually a pretty cool game. It gets really hard as time goes on. My only real problem with it is the graphics, some of the cake pieces look pathetic. Squeeze Box: Another cool one. It's basically like Ram-It with the twist that you have to exit the area when the blocks are gone. Or, you can max out points by staying there as long as possible. I love the graphics in this one, they're big and pretty damn detailed. Name This Game: I really like this one too. It's nothing stellar, but it's got some interesting graphics and the play can get pretty challenging later in the game. Commando Raid: Another good one. I like how the enemy soldiers dig down if you don't stop them. Has a lot of interesting tricks in it. Kind of like Missile Command with a bunch of different features. Towering Inferno: This is probably US Games best title. What's better than fighting fires? Lots of variety and it's damn difficult. Takes a lot of skill to get through it. Everything else they did sucks.
