Video Game(s) That Make You Mellow!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

In your opinion, what video game that you like to play help soothes you the most? Not a aggravate game that makes you rowdy or edgy, but relaxes you with good melodies, marvelous scenery, and picture perfect memories from your past or even current moments. I mean a true mesmerising game that you will always feel relaxed!

My games that gets me mellowed is Sonic R, Pilotwings 64, NiGHTS into Dreams, Panzer Dragon, Shadow of the Colossis and Okami!

How about the rest for you guys?

Anthony....

Just downloaded a game for 360 called Chime that's pretty relaxing...

Don't know of any old school games that do the same...

A couple of the obvious ones: Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. Depending on what I'm doing, Sims is pretty relaxing sometimes. And as for the less obvious ones, Space Jockey (easy to get into the zone with that one, plus a lot of nostalgia factor for me) and GTA 4 (we usually just run around causing destruction, what could be more relaxing?).

The ones that spring to mind for me are Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 on the Saturn, Bust-A-Move games and Shanghai on the Lynx.

It would have to be something on the Atari Jaguar I think...

Either that, or some of the old EGA and early VGA AD&D games for the IBM PC... like Pools of Radiance, or Champions of Krynn.

I long for the days when I had an hourly job, no responsibilities, and I could just sit in my apartment and play these games with no stress or anything for that matter.

Career, marriage, and babies... while all wonderful and I'd never give it up... it's just nice to reflect on a more simple time when I didn't have to worry about anything.

I don't really see myself playing Champions of Krynn like 35-40 years from now when I'm an old man and retired. Other than testing a couple of game systems just before I sell them on eBay, I haven't really played a game in like a couple of years...

Just playing games at all is very relaxing (especially Atari games). Reading reviews for games is also pretty mellowing to do, especially if I have a drink to go with it.

Playing games on "easy" until I enter a trance-like state... 2600 Asteroids and 7800 Galaga (each on the easiest settings) are good for this.

It's also relaxing to enable the cheats in a Grand Theft Auto game and just walk around blowing stuff up.

The SNES is the king of this sort of thing, mainly because of its propensity for moody ambient music. Great examples are Lord of the Rings, Vol. 1 and Drakkhen. Maybe Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana too.

Some Intellivision games can have a kind of trance-like effect if they're sufficiently laid-back, like Space Hawk and Utopia. Auto Racing works remarkably well with so-called "post-rock" music, i.e. Tortoise and Mogwai.

Believe it or not, Circus Atari.

It can become rather hypnotic when I get into a "zone". My eyes barely have to move and my fingers automatically twitch the controller. To play it well, conscious thought goes on the back burner.

No melodies or scenery, but certainly memories of playing Circus as a kid.

I hear you - I've got a whole stack of RPGs on my "retirement games" list.

For me, probably Mario platformers on the NES. The artwork, music and pacing of the games are pretty relaxing.

The OutRun games usually make me feel at peace (OutRun '86 and OutRun 2 more specifically).

Ys III always makes me mellow, too.

Sure, unless you actually played the game. I always loved that intro level, and then the pod gets taken. After that I was always freaking out because I was going to drown Ecco. :P (I think I'm generally a very nervous gamer.)

Toejam & Earl. Funky music, awesome style, laid back gameplay, great stuff.

I second this one. Just chillin out and opening presents and seein what they do. Fun stuff. Sometimes I will play just long enough to know I have some rocket skates and visit the level 0 hot tub with the hula babes. Morgan

Not to mention that game is hard as nails, too. There's no way in hell that game can possibly be "soothing" in the later stages.

That first area is nice though.. Just swimming, jumping, and soaking up the rays. The early parts of the Dreamcast remake also capture this element very well.
