+Larry #1 Posted September 8, 2010 I have an old Ramrod XL 3-way OS which uses three 27128 eproms. This unit is getting flakey, so I'd like to refurbish it, and at the same time replace the (big) square header pins with some nice round machined pins. The problem that I see is how to solder the header pins under the socket? The pin arrangement looks like this: X.....X.. (socket) --V.....V (header pins to motherboard <offset>) The only way that I can envision doing this is to have the socket raised from the Ramrod board so that I can get my soldering iron under the edge of the socket. (?) Or are there some special sockets or headers that would help in assembly? Thanks, Larry
+bob1200xl #2 Posted September 9, 2010 If the board has plated-thru holes, you can solder the pins from either side (top or bottom). The hard part is removing the old header, isn't it? You may have to remove the socket in order to get the headers out. You got pictures? Bob I have an old Ramrod XL 3-way OS which uses three 27128 eproms. +Larry #3 Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Hi Bob- Yes, removing the old header will be an issue, and as you mention, I'll have to remove the socket (destructively, I suspect). I can't get any decent closeup pictures. But here is one that at least shows the whole Ramrod XL board. You can see one row of the header pins at the upper left of the board. They were not clipped off. The other row is under the socket. I haven't searched a lot, yet, but looks like round header pins are getting hard to find. Did not find them at Digikey (Samtec) which I believe is where you had found them previously. -Larry If the board has plated-thru holes, you can solder the pins from either side (top or bottom). +bob1200xl #4 Posted September 9, 2010 The board looks like you can solder from either side but the header pins will be a bear to remove unless you pull them individually. TS-132-T-A is a 32 pin single row strip, tin plated. $3.22 ea. They have 1600 in stock. Dropcheck #5 Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Hi Larry, These are hideously expensive, but just change the pin count on the part # and you can find 24, 28, etc. Mouser Dual Header Sockets Dropcheck PS: Forgot to mention that it's a bear trying to solder it if you have something overlapping. ie another socket because of the filled in body. Oh well.... it was worth mentioning if it works for you. Edited September 9, 2010 by Dropcheck
+Larry #6 Posted September 10, 2010 Hi Bob & Dropcheck- Thanks kindly for the header info. I evidently didn't get close enough with the search keywords I was using, so I didn't find them initially. Both these look good, but I'll probably go with tin-plated rounds because of price. I bought some 28-pin gold, double-wipe, wire wrap sockets off eBay yesterday. So if I need to raise them up a bit, should be no problem (and I've plenty of regular sockets, too). -Larry
