moycon #1 Posted September 15, 2010 We are in the process on moving into a new house. I wanted to make sure my new home would have plenty of room for a mini arcade, and not only does it, it has a freaking wreck room that would put some bars to shame! I immediately hooked up with a local who specializes in restoring old video games. He had a garage full of working games and pinball's and about 150 semi working ones in storage on his property! I had $400 to spend and after a hard decision between Centipede, Space Invaders, Satan's Hollow and Rally X (He wanted $300 for Rally X) I decided my first game would be GORF, a childhood favorite. In the future I plan on snagging either the stand up Rally X or Mr Do from the man. I also want a cocktail game either Space Invaders or Ms PacMan and hopefully eventually a pinball (Probably one from the 70's since they are way cheaper). Check out the start to my new mini arcade!

+wood_jl #3 Posted September 15, 2010 Very cool. I remember being enthralled by this as a kid (ahhhh, the 80's) and "Tron" at about the same time, since the mall had them side by side; they must have been released about the same time. See if you can get one of those!
moycon #4 Posted September 17, 2010 He's actually wanting to get a Tron working before the new movie hits. He seemed pretty stoked about it and said Tron was one of his all time favs. I doubt I could afford what he would want for it, but I agree it would look awesome. I've made it to Space Corporal in GORF. Bad thing is the lights on the badges to the right of the monitor bezel don't light up and I'm thinking they are supposed to? I would be interested in getting those working. Also the monitor bezel has some light scratches on it. It looks like maybe it's some sort of plexi glass? Is something like that easily fixed? DaveD #5 Posted September 17, 2010 Nice score! I would have had a hard time choosing between that one and Satan's Hollow. I've been really getting into Satan's Hollow in MAME recently. There's just enough variety in tat game to keep me interested and coming back for more punishment.
Christophero Sly #6 Posted September 17, 2010 Nice! Gorf is one of my personal favorites as well. I would have made the same choice. I remember how much excitement the game generated when it first came out. A local convenience store got a cabinet right when it was released and kids just swarmed around it. The game created it's own little scene that lasted for weeks. I was a little to young to fit in with that crowd, so I had to hang out on the periphery and just watch until the hype died down before I was able to get my turn, but when I finally did... the robot voice, the awesome multi-missions, the way the audio of that game just seemed to envelope you, and especially the ranking system and how the badges would light up on the bezel--that game hooked me as hard as any classic coin-op ever did. I remember daydreaming about the game during school. I was so obsessed with the game, I used to make drawings of it. I can't tell you how badly I wanted to earn the rank of "Space Avenger". frogstar_robot #7 Posted September 17, 2010 I've made it to Space Corporal in GORF. Bad thing is the lights on the badges to the right of the monitor bezel don't light up and I'm thinking they are supposed to? Those lights the rank lights? If I remember right then indeed they do. If I further remember right they are probably small incandescents. Maybe they just need replacing......
moycon #8 Posted September 18, 2010 Those lights the rank lights? If I remember right then indeed they do. If I further remember right they are probably small incandescents. Maybe they just need replacing...... As it turns out they do work. I was playing yesterday and the lights in the room were turned off and I saw the Space Cadet lit up, they just aren't very bright. I'm thinking they should be brighter.
rxd #9 Posted September 18, 2010 Ah Gorf, my favorite. Only game I was ever able to get through all the levels on. Only was able to do it once though. Great pickup, I wish I had one!
moycon #10 Posted August 12, 2013 A couple months after I got my Gorf it stopped working. Well technically it worked, but was un-playable because the graphics were so garbled. A friend of mine said it might be the RAM boards and I ordered a couple sets of untested cards and tried to replace them. It didn't work. i then tried to swap out the cage and it quit working altogether. Then it sat for a long time. Few years it looks like! breakpack introduced me to a local guy who fixed his Super Pac-Man. The guy came over last week and after about an hour got my Gorf working again! Turns out the cage I installed was bad and was causing the monitor to not get power. The issue with the graphics was the Pattern Board NOT the RAM board and using the cards I had bought he got a full set of working cards. The bast part, he only charged me $50 even though he drove an hour to my house! I gave him $60 and told him I still owed him! I'm so happy to have my Gorf back!!
Breakpack #11 Posted September 20, 2013 I love your Gorf! I hope we can get it back up and running (it went out again)! And I don't want to spoil what else you got I figured you would wanna spill the beans for that, moycon! Man I need to start a thread on my arcade machines :D

Man I need to start a thread on my arcade machines :D Tis true, after about 2 weeks of bliss, the GORF started doing the exact same thing. Garbled graphics, unplayable. Ugh! At least I have my NEW cabinet up and running! I agree you should post your coin-ops in this forum!
SoulBlazer #13 Posted September 20, 2013 Tis true, after about 2 weeks of bliss, the GORF started doing the exact same thing. Garbled graphics, unplayable. Ugh! At least I have my NEW cabinet up and running! I agree you should post your coin-ops in this forum! Game seems like it's more hassle then it's worth. That's why I've never gone after my fantasy of buying a Atari Star Wars machine. Too much of a headache and repair costs for it.
Hyperboy #14 Posted September 20, 2013 My Star Wars cabinet is not problematic at all, way less than others. If that's your fantasy game go for it!

I have a copie of Gorf for Atari 2600 that I just bought about 1 week ago. Is it a special game or something I have not been able to play yet as my Atari seems to not work . quite bummed so far
