Game UWOL

Recommended Posts

For any here that doesn't know this Game was done by an actual ZX/MSX/CPC Spanish Software House (many more Games done by them).

Then SMM73 (a portuguese guy like me) done the C64 port.

This was talked at FormarWar and someone says that it would like to see it on A8 and how it could/would look?

O.k. it's here I enter, with only just a little number of persons know, I've been re-design it into A8 2:1.

I have:

-All Tiles/Chars for all the Game (55Screens).

-All Soft sprites.

-All PMs.

-Playing area Master Screens.

-Engine of "how to build/code" this Game:

It fit in just 1Charset for the Playing area for all the Game/levels more 1Kb. for the Top/Downs Hi-resol. status Area.

It will work, how I thought/construct it, I have a coder behind that say it has nothing from what I've done that it will not work (sadly, he has no time to it  )

First I must get the MojonTwins permission(Spanish Software House owner of Copyright), SMM73 (the only Graphics I ripped are the C64 Platforms (all the others: Walls, player, Enemys, Coins,... are my Artist creation).

I hope you understand that this takes me Weeks, Nights without sleeping, and is the the first real (from the begining untill the end, all things done :P by me).

I would like your special attention for this and that this time someone could think in coding it... just think, no problem to think, probably someone will be interested.

And here is the MojonTwins site about Zx Spectrum version:

UWOL_Zx Spectrum

And the specific C64 Page about the C64 version:

UWOL_C64

As I said I have all the Tiles, and all that stuff ready, just need a Coder and an A8 Editor.

This is not simple G2F Screens, this are Screen done with the Tiles.

I can build any of the 55 Screens in minutes, just place the Tiles on Screen.

But here are the examples:

(Our Guy is not the definitive Sprite Shape, just ex. of colours, by now):

Let's see if this time (for the first time I have some luck (finally9.

Greetings for all.

José Pereira.

Hope to post here the complete Map, like how it will/would look on A8 of all the 55 Screens/levels in the next Week.

By now, the ZX Spectrum map:

post-6517-128535243451_thumb.png

Just to show how many different colours you can get on the different Screens and Lines:

->Platforms: by DLIs.

->Back Bricks/Walls: 16 different possible (more than C64&ZX)

Colours: 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14

Each with two Luminances: 8(Medium) and 12(Light).

All Objects/Enemys/Uwol Guy the same colour in all the Screens.

Hope someone will appear... one Day...

Greetings to all.

José Pereira.

Hi, some good news!...

We have it almost done and have the MojonTwins owners of the copyright permission.

We are getting some last things working and hope to get this one finished very soon.

But I would like a help from you:

I don't have a real working Machine by now, so I would like to get your opinion how this Screens will look on a real one with Artifacting:

The .xex Files:

fin-bad.xex

fin-good_G2F.xex

Thanks.

Greetings.

I'm not sure how these will look on a real screen as I haven't checked.

But one thing I will say is that your graphics on here are amazing. I particularly like the Mojon Twins loader which is rather understated but elegant at the same time.

How did you get on with Crownland by the way?

Thanks, sorry with soo many things going on at the same time I totally forgt to answer you.

I was just trying to see how long the Game is and what a very good looking Game will have for his final.

A8 Games always lack for Introduction (some movie Trailer) and Endings...

Thanks.

PAL 800XL, Chroma/Luma on Commodore 1084

the first two images look nice and sharp with good colour

The third image flickers like crazy and is pretty much unreadable, unfortunately the camera does not show how bad the image is

Thanks.

So the MojonTwins looks great but on Emulator.

Yeah, it has some DLIs. at the PMs, but not many changes, one sometimes two.

And I didn't get a single "Error" at the "Check" Option on G2F.

Anyone more try this one on other T.Vs./Monitors, and on NTSC?

Anyone here have suggestions, how to get less flicker and still have some PMs.

In case you want to study, here's the G2F File:

mojon.zip

Thanks.

If you're reusing PMs on a frame by frame basis to fill more area, you get less flicker with darker colours, or colours that are "closer" to the luma of the background.

e.g. standalone object on back background, keep the luma somewhere <=6

overlay object to add colour to a bright background, keep the luma as close as possible to that of the background.

Just tried real machine... game end stuff seems fine.

The loading screen... looks like the Display List is too tall, that's making the screen jump around.

Try this one:

Mojon-l2.xex

ed - it looks real good too, although again it's on a 1084 through RGB, mightn't be the case on a TV.

That has fixed it on LCD and 1084 via s-video, image looks very small for a loader though

Thanks to take your time Guys.

This is not the Loading Screen.

It's indeed, one of them.

First it shows this small one follow by the Cow:

post-6517-128921900917_thumb.png

Each one of this two are only on Screen for some seconds and disappear while the Game continues the Loading.

Then it cames one real Loading Screen.

This one will only be on A8 as it will be shown during Loading process that's why it is 5colours more PMs, but without DLIs. (but looking very good).

The others are only near/final complete of the Loading process.

Here's one of them:

post-6517-128921926256_thumb.png

(The Cow and this last one are not my remakes, there's another one Great A8 Guy involved on the Loading/Tittle Screens as I am not very good at Multicolour ones).

We have to put this two Screens as they are the ones from the Copyright owners!

There were 4changes at the "096" BadLine. I made some changes (and some Darker colours also):

G2F:mojon.zip

.xex:mojon.xex

Could you try this one?

And anyone around here with NTSC to see how Artifacting is looking on the small Pictutre?

Rybags can you send me your .G2F that I send to the coder?

Thanks you all.

José Pereira.

Looking good Jose.

With the Mojon logo, you had set the mode on every row making the display list too long as Rybags described. You can set all the empty areas with blank lines in the display list and just set it where you've drawn the image, the screen ram will be only a few bytes. I guess the person/s coding the project would sort them properly for use.

Jose - I just hex edited the file.

That title screen has all Mode 2 lines, you could equally get away with just reconstructing it with 8xBlank instructions except for where the graphics are.

But if you're using G2F... not sure if it'll let you construct a short screen. Maybe try setting the last few screen lines to Antic Mode 4 instead of Mode 2.

Yes, it does to get only the Lines with Picture and all the others un-used.

Have the last Line Hi-resolution problem been solved by G2F Guys?

If you want to try, here is the .xex with just the Logo in Hi-Resol. and all the other Screen Lines not used:

mojon_just small Area used.xex

Thanks.

That's fine now José with the blank lines included in the display list.

There is a way around it although of course it's only nessasary if you needed to have data on the last row :)
