Classic Gaming references on TV

Recommended Posts

Today I was watching Married with Children (magnificent seven), and I noticed something familiar in the background on Buds desk next to his TV, an Atari 5200.

are there any other classic gaming references or nods you have noticed (Aside from Futurama)?

Family Guy had an episode where Peter Griffin pulled a Colecovision out of his belly button.

The IT Crowd has a character that wore a shirt with the kill screen of Pac-Man in one episode (and I think some classic gaming stuff in their office, if I remember correctly).

There are classig gaming references on The Big Bang Theory all the time...in fact the main characters have 'classic gaming night' every Friday night.

There were some classic arcade machines in the mansion on Silver Spoons.

In one episode of Taxi, Louie brought in a Pac-Man machine and paid "Reverend Jim" in quarters so Jim would keep playing it.

Not sure but is that a Genesis 3?

No it's a model 2. That cart would dwarf the console if it was a model 3 lol.

In two somewhat TV commercials here in the states. There were some Classic Gaming References.

One was a Subaru commercial which was about Hand-me-downs. And it featured both a Atari 2600 and a Commodore 64.

And the other was a Intel commercial, which featured a Atari 2600 with Space Invaders.

I zoomed in on the console in the Intel commercial, blew it up another 200% in Paint Shop Pro, and used "one step photo fix" to brighten it up. Conclusion-- Regardless of whatever type of joysticks they're holding, or what's being shown on the TV screen, that ain't no Atari 2600 console, and those ain't no Atari 2600 game cartridges.

Maybe a coleco gemini flipped around? And the carts could be M Network games. They seem to match the cartridge format.

I don't know enough about what all the different consoles look like to guess, but I figured the producers of the commercial did the usual Hollywood thing of picking some machine that happened to be handy and using it with fake (or recorded?) images of a game in play.

Not a TV reference, and I think it's been mentioned before... but I was watching "Blade Runner" last week and saw the Atari logo with the fuji symbol in several street scenes.

In the 'Addictions' episode of You Can't Do That on Television, Christine "Moose" McGlade plays an Atari 2600 throughout the whole episode. here's a link to that episode:

http://www.ycdtotv.com/epg/index.php?p=28

Love the summary of the episode too:

Episode No: 28

Title: Addictions

Pre-Empt: Pacman Eats General Hospital

Plot

Christine spends the entire show playing an ATARI 2600 to demonstrate how addictive video games and other things can be. Oh...and General Hospital is also used as an example....about 100 times.

lol :)

I remember on Growing Pains, the Seavers had a Nintendo in their living room and Ben Seaver would always refer to Super Mario Bros as "Super Vito Bros",and funny whenever they showed them playing that game they had Atari 2600 Pacman sound effects instead and they never showed the front of the screen.

I had no idea Bud Bundy had an Atari 5200 tho lol.
