Vectrex Spinner Hack questions

1. I have the 72-in-1 multicart. If I have the spinner (Atari driving paddle) plugged in when I turn on the Vectrex, it automatically selects the first game. So in order to use the spinner, I have to plug it in after selecting the game. Is there a way to hack the spinner to stop this auto-selection problem?

 

2. The spinner does not spin fast enough to be useful in games like Armor Attack. Is there a way to make the spinner require less spinning?
