Cheesystick
Hello, There are three NTSC Super Nintendo games that were released outside of the US: International Superstar Soccer, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, and Super Copa. Super Copa is not an official release according to the lists supplied by Nintendo, but it does has a typical NTSC cartridge shell, (not the curved variety found in PAL games). I recently purchased a copy of this game only to find that it doesn't work. In my 10 years of collecting SNES games, there have been very few games that I have not been able to get working after some cleaning. Unfortunately, this is one of them, and try as I might, I cannot get it to work. The seller said that he tested it before it shipped out, and it was very well-packed. So I am left with this question: Will this game, (despite the NTSC cart shell), only play in a PAL SNES? Anybody out there have this game? If it is indeed a PAL SNES game, I would have to mod my system or buy a PAL SNES to play the game. I was at first under the impression that PAL games could be played in a NTSC SNES as easily as a Japanese Super Famicom games, but I was wrong. There are pins in the SNES that lock out PAL games, not to mention the whole 50v/60v power voltage issue. There is a converter out there but it only plays US SNES games on a PAL system, not the other way around. I have never heard of a converter made to play PAL games on a NTSC SNES. It is possible that I might get a PAL SNES down the road, but I am more concerned right now with wondering if this game works or not. Does anybody know if this is a PAL-only game, or is my copy just a dud? Thanks, Chris
Austin
If it's in the standard US shell, I doubt it's a PAL release. I can't help much more than that. May want to ask over at NintendoAge. Some of those guys have complete collections, I'm sure they could help out. In the meantime, here's their listing for it. If you've got the same cart, it's probably the US/NTSC release and not a PAL release: http://www.nintendoage.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Element.View&pId=4&egID=40577&lgID=40577&sID=40577
badinsults
There was no PAL release of Super Copa. There is a version of Super Copa that uses a standard US label, and the Playtronic version which was released in Brazil. The Playtronic version is a label variant, there is no difference in the game ROM. If you look at the PCB scan of Super Copa I have posted below, you will see that it uses a standard NTSC lockout chip (D411A), and has a US region code on the ROM (SNS-75-0). There is nothing mysterious about this game, except that it didn't get much of a release in the US, so it is a bit hard to find. Sounds like you got a bum cart. You will likely have to polish off the connectors (with very fine grit sandpaper?) if there there is no visible damage to the PCB. Cheesystick
Badinsults, Thanks for the info and the picture. I don't have a security game bit to open the cartridge. However, I have cleaned the game to the best on my ability and the gold connectors look almost new. I'm not sure how much more scrubbing could help. The game is a bit beat up, has some paint stains, etc., so I think it could just be a dud, maybe it got wet. Part of the reason that I got it for cheap is because it is a little beat up. I didn't really mind that it had a torn label because I just wanted a copy to help complete my collection. I didn't mind paying a little less for a beat up game vs. over $50 for one in perfect condition. I did want it working, however... You can see the auction here: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 180552988656 I am a little bummed because I doubt that I'll get a copy for that cheap any time soon. There are currently no other copies, (at least ones listed by themselves), up on eBay, so that is a big bummer. The seller seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't believe me whatsoever, so I hope this doesn't get ugly. Little does he know I would be much happier if I could get this to work vs. some sticky eBay dispute. On a side note, can you recommend a multi-tool for opening game carts? I have seen some that offer many different bits to open games from various different consoles, but I never knew too much about them. Thanks. badinsults
Buy a 3.8 mm security bit. Seriously, they only cost a couple of bucks, and it makes is so much easier to clean games. It also works with NES carts as well. I use a soft white eraser to clean the contacts. Plus then you can see if there is any internal damage that might make the game not work. I've opened up some carts to find that entire resistors corroded away, but the contacts looked fine. mimo
get a plastic Bic Biro (or similar) remove the nib and ink thingy. Gently apply some heat to the end of the Bic case, when it gets molten stick it onto the gamebit screw head. Undo gamebit screw
