Cheap SNES -> Super Famicom cart converters?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any idea where I can get a good, cheap SNES to Super Famicom converter (i.e., looking to play Japanese games on a US system). It seems the cheapest I can find on eBay is twenty or thirty dollars.. Meh. That seems a little pricey, and I'm not looking to take the tabs out of my system either (trying to leave it 100% intact, if you know what I mean).

Just pop out the two plastic pieces with a razor and a hammer..if you are underage, please ask parents for their assistance....

a razor is not even needed. get a good strong set of needle-nose pliers. reach then into the cart slot, grab as much of the tab as you can, then break it off. that's what i did, worked fine, first try.

The OP already said he didn't want to do that.

Mod a game genie, that's what I did. Just remove the tabs.

Yeah, going by the other options, this is what I'll probably do. It seems I can get one online for under $10 after shipping (I'll have to check locally, too).

I think I'd rather cut the tabs out of the system than ruin the values of some import games. :o

I've heard of these before, but didn't realize they were so cheap these days. I may look into one of them instead of a Game Genie.. At least I can use it for other purposes. :)

If you can find one cheaply, an Xband modem has a passthrough mode that can be used to play Super Famicom games.

Unlike some other converters, the Xband modem connects all the cartridge pins.

I ended up going with one of these (Just paid for it right now, actually). Roughly about $15 after shipping for a brand new one in box (Didn't seem like a bad deal). We'll see how well it works, for both converting carts, as well as the save function itself (I'm particularly interested in this part!).

I actually looked these up on eBay after you posted this. The only one up there was pretty expensive (for what it is, anyway). It would be really neat to own one of these things though (even though they don't do anything these days, haha). Maybe if I can find one cheap down the road I'll snag it for collection purposes. :)

Ah, nothing like bumping your own thread, I say.. ;)

In all seriousness though, I received my Naki Game Saver today. I tested it out prior to leaving for work and it's a great alternative to a real converter, my Akumajo Dracula is playing perfectly. I haven't tested the save function yet (Have to read the manual for that), but hell.. For $15 after shipping for a new one (in a big, cool box, mind you), I can't say it was a bad deal at all. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. :)

I've got one of the Honeybee adapters from Hudsonsoft but it's the opposite. It's for playing US SNES games on a Japanese Super Famicom.
