The cheapness of some people is unbelievable

Recommended Posts

Was just perusing ebay and stumbled on a Sunnyvale heavy with a few games and all the original heavy sixer controllers for $40 BIN and can you believe this...THERE WERE PEOPLE MAKING LOWER OFFERS FOR IT! Is $40 really out of line for something like this? I don't think it is.

No. That is a decent price. You can't jump to the "cheap" conclusion right off the bat though. I will use myself as an example. I have 4 or 5 heavy sixers right now. I don't need another one, so I would not pay $40 for a loose one. I would however pay $20-25 for one though. If I saw it, I might make a low offer. IMO, the Best Offer button is there to be used.

The games and manuals that come with it, even though not rare, you could probably get $20 just for those alone, and that's a conservative guess. There's guys selling the heavy sixer paddles for $75 and the CX-10 joysicks for $40-$60 each now, too. $40 for the lot should be one of those deals that you just jump on without even thinking.

They have the Atari logo on them instead of the word "paddle".

That was a nice score. I took a gamble on this one -

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 2507026539911?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=250702653991&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

As I said, it is a gamble. I was tired when I put in the bid. But, for $35 who knows.

yeah, that one looks to be more of a gamble. There's a lot that is unclear from the photo and the little information the seller put in the listing. That one I'd lowball, but with clearer pics and a better description, I'd go higher if I had to. Some people take really crappy pics so I pass on a lot of them. I might lose out on a hidden gem some of the time, but it's better than getting burned and ending up with a light six that the seller described as a heavy because he didn't know any better and took a lousy picture of it.

Maybe it is a heavy. That pic is pretty crappy. Hard to tell.

That's what I hate about crappy pics. If they're dark, have shadows on them, slightly out of focus or taken from more than a foot or two away it can make it impossible to really see the bezel clearly enough to determine whether it's a light or heavy.

Hard to tell really. Crappy pics drive me crazy especially when I am looking for the later date label variation. But, he did say in the questions that it was made in the US and gave the serial number. I will let you know when I get it. It was a gamble worth $35 shipped for me as it does look like a clean Atari and the box does not look all that bad. Plus, I don't have a boxed light sixer and $35 shipped for one of those is not all that bad.

I did grab this last night...

Been there, done that, have stacks of worthless commons that I can't get rid of as a result. Buying a bulk lot just for one or two carts is almost never as good an idea as it first sounds especially when you've done it a few times. I won't do it anymore for anything less than an R8.

Those guys who make up those packages know exactly what they're doing. That rare cart isn't in the lot by chance. They throw it in there because they know somebody will pay big bucks for the lot just to get the rare and then the disposal of the commons falls on someone else's shoulders.

Sounds like the deal I picked up last month - on a random day I was on ebay and decided to see what Atari items had auctions ending in the next few hours. Saw a heavy sixer (which turned out to be in truly excellent condition, though it was hard to tell from the posted photo), with original sticks/paddles/power supply, plus 20-some games. Starting bid price was $30; shipping was $15. There were zero bids on it. So I bid the $30, figured what the heck. Nobody else bid, so I got it. Good deal!

Have you considered sending them to Al to be turned into homebrews?

I've acquired 3 h6ers in the last 2 months for prices ranging $10 to $20. There's just more of them for sale than are wanted by collectors/users. I bid on them if they're cheap since I can't leave some poor Sears system homeless. ;)

Never! That would be tantamount to book burning!

NO, you have it wrong, it is like hiding a Playboy inside a Car and Driver cover!
