Is there a homebrew Pac Man for 2600?

Recommended Posts

We all know how badly the official 2600 Pac Man sucks and that the 2600 is capable of doing better, but has anyone actually done it and released a better version of Pac Man?

Search the forums. There are many improved hacks of both Pac Man proper and Ms Pac Man which improve greatly over this pathetic piece of childhood-scaring digital excrement.

Nukey Shay also did Pac-Man 8k. It's a hack of the original, with the proper colors, actual fruit, and intermissions. Quite a good version.

Eric (Ebivision) Bacher's "Pac-Man" and Dennis Debro's "Pac-Man 4k" are the only two homebrew attempts.

The hacked versions really don't look substantially different except for corrected colors and real fruit icons. I meant something that looked and played a lot closer to the arcade, not just a patched up version of Atari Pac Man.

Where can I get the Ebivision and Pac Man 4k versions? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

The Ebivision version is almost impossible to find. I believe it received a very limited cartridge release, but no ROM release. Ebivision, however, hacked their own code into their game, Pesco (also no ROM release for this, but you can get the cartridge from the AtariAge store. Pesco, in turn, was hacked into a fantastic version of Pac-Man, called Hack 'Em by Nukey Shay. You can get that here.

Dennis Debro programmed from scratch a great version of Pac-Man in just 4k (the same amount of space Atari Pac-Man used.) It can be found here.

The links don't help me. I was looking for carts not ROM files.

Well, you can try the games out on an emulator. And when you find one you like, you can see about getting it put on a cart, either by the store here or someone else - as long as there's no infringement or other problems/issues in doing so.

Wow nice & rude. Sorry it "doesn't help" you bub.. but these people are trying to help answer your question with info. You could phrase it better than that.

FYI most people here are able to play everything they're showing you on cart. It's not their fault you're clueless about that.

Hi there,

I'd suggest you try Pacman4K in an emulator for a couple of months (let's see...this is October and...yeah) and then decide if you would like it on cart. You might need that time to decide.

True...I should have mentioned that the others are just hacks.

OA, as others have mentioned, you really shouldn't dismiss emulation out-of-hand. Emulation can serve a purpose, even for those who prefer playing on the Real Hardware.

Once you try different games in emulation you can decide which ones you really want to have in cart form - via Albert's 'put any ROM on a cart' service here; subject to developer exemption, of course.

Alternatively, you could skip the expense of the ROM-on-a-cart service by just buying a Harmony Cartridge and downloading the ROMs you want to play. If you use the harmony, you're gonna need ROMs.
