4Ks #1 Posted October 13, 2010 Like the topic title says, I bought a Saturn. It's a working system that comes with the 2D controller, power cord, and RF cord, all for $37. I think I made off pretty good. Unfortunately, I used my PSP money to buy it (sorry, Ridge Racer). Oh well, I guess the Saturn section of Slackers is finally going to have a new customer.
The_Laird #2 Posted October 13, 2010 Congrats the Saturn is a brilliant console with alot of great games, recently I have been playing it far more than any of my other machines.
Eltigro #3 Posted October 13, 2010 Did you get any games? Or if not, what are you looking forward to getting?
Hitachi #4 Posted October 13, 2010 ROLLING START!!!!! I love Daytona USA. It's an amazing game. I only have three games for my saturn currently but i have the PC port of Virtual-On and it's a great game. Enjoy your saturn. I know this isn't the main subject of the topic, but how do i play imports on my console?
4Ks #5 Posted October 13, 2010 Did you get any games? Or if not, what are you looking forward to getting? Nope, no games. But some I'm really looking forward to are Virtua Racing, Sonic 3D Blast, Shining the Holy Ark, Bug!, Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits: Atari Edition. mimo #6 Posted October 13, 2010 Nice system, mod chip to play back ups an action replay cart or an internal mod ( switched or switchless) http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2005/01/mod-your-sega-saturn-to-play-imports.html
mimo #7 Posted October 13, 2010 Oh, and the light gun games are pretty good IMO
Reaperman #8 Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) now I'm wanting to dust one of my saturns off for a go. Lots of good games on that system, including some stellar imports. Despite having a few megabucks titles, most good games for the saturn are fairly inexpensive I could go for some dark savior--I don't think I ever made it all the way through that game. Hitachi #9 Posted October 13, 2010 The link makes it sound like nodding is required to play imports. Is that correct?
horseboy #10 Posted October 13, 2010 Get 10 of your best friends together and play some Saturn Bomberman.
MagitekAngel #11 Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) I just bought a Saturn too, here on AtariAge. As soon as it comes in I'm going to have to decide which console to unplug: -Atari 2600? -Master System? -Genesis? -NES? -SNES? -N64? -Wii? -PS2? -PS3? -ANOTHER PS3??!! -Xbox 360? -My Computer?!??!?! Definitely can't touch either one of the PS3's, because I've got them standing sideways next to each other, even though they're slims and aren't supposed to be stood up sideways without a stand, and with a SNES nestled between them for support, they look like some kind of digital Stonehenge. Okay, back on topic. . . I did some reading and from what I can tell, you can buy a memory cartridge on ebay that will also allow you to play import games. Called the Action Replay 4M or something like that, goes for about 25 bucks from what I've seen. But do I still need a modchip on top of that? staxx #12 Posted October 13, 2010 If you have an 4M action replay, no you do not need a mod chip to play imports.
nathanallan #13 Posted October 13, 2010 The link makes it sound like nodding is required to play imports. Is that correct? Correct. You can buy a cart that will do the same thing but they're costlier. From what I have read, the round button ones are easier to mod with that chip than the oval button ones (which one is yours?). I think the cart is an Action Replay one or something like that (not sure atm). I love my Saturn, and it makes me want to get it out and play more hearing that you got yours! Definitely agreed, Daytona USA is a good one! Whenever I get the mod chip for mine, I have a couple of imports that I get to play

MagitekAngel #17 Posted October 13, 2010 If you have an 4M action replay, no you do not need a mod chip to play imports. Thanks much for the clarification, the cartridge might be a bit costlier, but I know I can't work a soldering iron to save my life; no need to destroy my new Saturn if I can help it, now is there? mimo #18 Posted October 13, 2010 You need a mod chip only to play copies of games, a mod chip will not enable you to play imports
Hitachi #19 Posted October 13, 2010 25 bucks is enough to convince me to get the action replay. Unless... can someone show me a link to a mod chip tutorial?
nathanallan #20 Posted October 13, 2010 You need a mod chip only to play copies of games, a mod chip will not enable you to play imports Ah! I was a bit confused. I knew something was wrong there, just couldn't remember what. Playing burns is also cool:)
+wood_jl #21 Posted October 14, 2010 Did you get any games? Or if not, what are you looking forward to getting? Nope, no games. But some I'm really looking forward to are Virtua Racing, Sonic 3D Blast, Shining the Holy Ark, Bug!, Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits: Atari Edition. Save yourself the disappointment with "Virtua Raching" on the Saturn; it bites the big one - it was outsourced. I bought that one back in the day, and it was one of the greatest disappointments of my gaming history. If you have a 32X, it's great on that. I bought a $5 32X just for that game. The others you mention are good. Don't forget Sega Rally; it's fantastic. There are 2 versions of "Dayonta USA." One is called just that, and the other is "CCE edition" (or something like that) and is allegedly higher resolution, but somehow it's not as fun as the original - control, or somehthing. I have both, and my "CCE" edition is the Netlink edition, but I think it's the same playability as the CCE (non-netlink). Bomberman is fantastic, but I think it's expensive. Virtua Fighter 2 is still impressive through an S-video cable, today. Shooting games (as preppie! said). Need For Speed is *every* bit as good as the Playstation version, which is impressive. Animan #22 Posted October 14, 2010 (edited) Yes, Sega Rally is an amazing port! One of the best games on the system. Fighting Vipers is like Virtua Fighter 2 meets glam rock. Very fun and dirt cheap, too. Fighters Megamix I have yet to play, but many people call it the best game on the system. Sega Ages also contains excellent ports of Space Harrier, Outrun, and Afterburner. Great way to use your analog arcade stick and racing wheel . Austin #24 Posted October 14, 2010 Sonic 3D Blast is terrible on the Saturn. Unless you thoroughly enjoy minute-long load times between stages.
nathanallan #25 Posted October 14, 2010 Austin, you bring up a good point, I'll ask it here but will start a new thread anyway. Why can't we upgrade the CD mech inside a disk based console, so load times are better? AFAIK they are 1x and 2x drives. Interesting.
