Gabriel #2 Posted October 19, 2010 http://www.gamespot.com/news/6281815.html Looks like they're reimagining it as a simple turn and burn arcade starfighter game. I think that's a bad move for Star Raiders. While the original certainly had it's starfighter style atmosphere, what set it apart were all the features and complexity. Those extra elements made it feel more like a large starship ala the Enterprise than a X-Wing fighter. Indeed, that was the intent as Star Raiders was supposed to be a action/graphical adaptation of the classic text based Star Trek sector roaming game (Stellar Track was the Atari 2600 adaptation). Arcadey starfighter games were a dime a dozen. What set Star Raiders apart were it's strategic and simulation aspects. The trailer (admittedly only 15 seconds long) doesn't offer anything other than a Shadow Squadron with better visuals. And I don't think the Star Raiders name needs to be brought out of retirement for a bland quasi-sim mission based starfighter game like every other one for the past 20 years. I never thought I'd have a need to say this, but it needs more Warpspeed. Oh, and I've been waiting for a Star Raiders remake/sequel for all of those 20 years (ever since my last Atari 5200 controller died in 1990). My hatred and fury will be fiercer than a supermassive supernova should they besmirch Star Raiders's honor.

svenski #4 Posted October 19, 2010 Great news ! Will it be as good as the original? I remember having to play it on an old b&w portable for about a year until I saved up to buy myself a color TV.
Cliff Friedel #5 Posted October 19, 2010 I personally think it would be cool if they went the route of the X series. I just hope that gameplay isn't sacrificed for graphics. That seems to be a common thread as of late with Atari branded games.

SoundGammon #8 Posted October 19, 2010 One element they could add to the game is have the Zylons have secret star bases and thee use them to launch more enemy ships. Your job would be to locate those secret star-bases and destroy them or there wouldn't be any chance of winning. One idea is that when you destroy a Zylon basestar is that it reveals a part of a code, like Countermeasure, to where they are located!
OldAtarian #9 Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/168252-star-raiders-for-the-360 Next time, search for existing topics before getting your hopes up. Why would I bother searching for an old topic when the article I linked is only a few days old? If the article was dated July, it might reasonably be expected that I would look for an older thread, but not when the article is from the current month. Besides, if the thread isn't on page 1, it's not worth the trouble of looking for it. You can't honestly be serious. Nukey Shay #10 Posted October 19, 2010 Yes, I was. Your original post didn't offer any opinion one way or another...just a link. So I pointed to another thread that had the same discussion going on. I'd do the same if threads are days or even hours apart. The "...before getting your hopes up" comment was given because you posted no opinion. So far, it looks like a 3rd-person-only game with the Star Raiders name slapped on it. Nothing particularly Star Raider-y about it

If it is, this shouldn't be in the Modern Gaming area.

Hatta #13 Posted October 19, 2010 The article does say it retains the tactical map, so maybe it's not totally different. Shame about the 3rd person perspective though.

+wood_jl #18 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) That's lame that it's called Star Raiders. Even if it's an OK space game, it has nothing to do with the original. It's true that the Star Raiders franchise is not a widely-known property (compared to Asteroids, Battlezone), but Star Raiders is well known to a small, but hardcore/dedicated fanbase. I wouldn't be surprised if "Atari" ends up diluting this franchise as well. Why couldn't they have made it an updated "real" Star Raiders? That game was fun as hell, and a remake of it that stayed true would be fun. Or, why didn't they call it something else? What's coming is some unknown space game that will probably erase the legacy of the real Star Raiders. Edited January 31, 2011 by wood_jl
+HammR25 #19 Posted May 12, 2011 The 360 version is out today on Xbox Live. The trial looked a lot more true to the original game than Yars Revenge but that's not saying much. I also haven't played the original Star Raiders in 25 years.
SlowMvngTarget #20 Posted May 23, 2011 I LOVED Star Raiders for the 2600. Halfway through the XBLA Trial version, I was yawning. Disappointing since I was kinda psyched about this.

Yep, the 2600 version is indeed better. I much prefer the 400/800 version by far, myself.. I love it with some 80's music going, and you get a quick double photon blast that seemingly sideswipes a Zylon and the sector's now cleared. Bam! You feel like a god, on the prowl, going to get your next victim! Swooping in and out, blasting, working through the galactic chart with unearthly ease. Chris++ #22 Posted May 24, 2011 No "modern" FP space game has bypassed Colony Wars 3 on the PS1, in my opinion. It would be a pleasant surprise indeed if any programmer...well, humungaloid team of them...had the balls to skip the vacuous modern trappings and actually one-up the simple yet vast motif of that awesome old game. Star Raiders on the VCS was a disgrace compared with the original, so whatever the new one is, it couldn't possibly be worse than that.
Gabriel #23 Posted May 24, 2011 Star Raiders on the VCS was a disgrace compared with the original, so whatever the new one is, it couldn't possibly be worse than that. The 2600 version at least has some passing similarity to the 400/800 original, as well as some attempt at gameplay similarity. The remake has none of that.
Chris++ #24 Posted May 25, 2011 Good point; they only seem to be trading on the name...which is strange, as I wouldn't think the name would carry much "commercial weight" in 2011!
Gamemoose #25 Posted May 29, 2011 Ugh. It's vile. Mission based combat with a ship that can transform into different combat modes (which obvious physical changes). Not that fun for me. Is making a space combat game a dying art form or something?
