ADAM = EMP

I've been aware that the ADAM emits EMP when powered off. What portion of it does this? Does the CV do it also?

The printer and apperantly the DDD drives do too, just keep your tapes and disks 4 ft or further away when you power on/off the unit.

Yes, one of the biggest mistakes people made back in '83 was to leave a data pack in the drive when powering on or off the system. Unfortunately, a lot of people probably just assumed that since you placed the cartridge in the cart slot before turning on the system and only removed it after turning off the system, that this practice held true for data packs and later disks as well.

 

I hate to say it, as it's been repeated by thousands of others over the years, but here I go... RTFM (read the f****n manual).

Or in the ADAM's case, the included Supplement sheet for the digital data drive.

I'm already aware of the issue surrounding the EMP in the ADAM. I remember killing a couple of tapes back in the day. So, that's not news.

 

What I'm asking is, what specifically in the ADAM is producing the EMP. And, I'm asking if the CV also produces the same EMP, as they share similar CV boards?

On the first tape drives, when turned on the read/write sensor would emit an EMP that would ruin the part of the tape by the sensor making the entire tape useless. I think Coleco fixed that after a couple of months. I got an ADAM for Xmas 1983 and occasionally forgot tapes in the drive and never ruined any.

 

The printer contains a magnet (solenoid) so tapes should be kept away from the printer.

 

I don't think the CV has any EMP issues.
