Question: Civilization IV or Civilization V?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am interested in finding out opinions on both games, Civilization IV and Civilization V. I am looking to buy either but I am not sure what would fit me best.

I *loved* Civilization III and I am worried that the newer games will lack the panache that this game had. I have not played it for months and I kind of miss wasting hours and hours on it.

I also have a question regarding installation: Could I install the game onto an external hard drive (I have a 1TB drive) and run it from that instead of my computer (which has only a 20GB HD)?

Let me know if you can help. I haven't been around here in a while and all but I trust the opinion of fellow Atariagers when it comes to games.

I love both games. Right now I'd give the nod to Civ 5, but there's a demo out for it. Try it out and if you don't like it you can get the complete Civ 4 Gold Pack with the game and both expansions for under $20.

Where can the demo be found?

Also, I already asked but could I install the game on an external HDD and run it from that? The external HDD is a 1TB drive.

Yeah, don't know about the external HD, sorry.

I imagine the demo can be found on the official website. Check 2K's and Firaxis's websites.

I would give the nod to V as well. IV and V are quite different though and people seem to have strong feelings, so a demo would be a good idea.

Also - 20GB HD? If your machine is as old as that would suggest, you aren't going to be running either of those I'd say.

Just for your info, when I installed IV a couple of years ago it told me it would refuse to install because I was running SlySoft's CloneCD program. I don't know if that means it will give you grief for trying to install it to an external hard drive, technically it shouldn't, but also technically it told me I had pirated software on my computer when I didn't (to the best of my knowledge CloneCD is a legit program, not pirated software).

You should be able to install it (Civ V) on your external hd, just make sure the drive is connected when you want to play it and when you turn your PC on as I've had problems with some programs getting "lost" when I've forgot to power up the external drive before boot up.

I love Civ IV. Civ V is different in a lot of ways but from what I've played it so far I like it. Haven't played it enough yet to give it a real thumbs up or thumbs down. From player reviews I've seen people seem to love it or hate it.
