GKC #1 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) I was at a local retro video game store and they had a sealed Sega Saturn for $85. Just wondering if that is a good deal or not. I will probably go back and pick it up in the morning if it is. They had about 20 or so games too (not included with the $85). What are some of the better games for the system I should be looking out for? Thanks Edited November 10, 2010 by GKC
tz101 #2 Posted November 10, 2010 Sealed, as in new in box, never been opened? If so, then $85 is very reasonable. If it is used and resealed, then $85 is a bit high. May be worth $70 at most in that condition.

May be worth $70 at most in that condition. As far as I know it had never been opened. There were opened CIB Dreamcasts that weren't resealed so I am not sure why he would take the time to reseal one and not the other. Unless someone else resealed it and traded it in. I will take a better look at it tomorrow. Any easy way to tell if it has been resealed as opposed to never opened? I am very interested in getting a Saturn. I should have just picked it up and worried about if I over paid later. But I thought I would ask here first. The guy was closing when I was leaving and I will just drop by tomorrow when he opens so it should still be there. I figured I had the night to ask my questions here first. MagitekAngel #4 Posted November 10, 2010 A month ago I had never even seen a Saturn in real life, and now I somehow have two. $85 is a steal if it's actually sealed. There's too many good games for the system to count, but from what I've heard, importing is the way to go. Gotta get that Action Replay 4M cart first though. I will take a better look at it tomorrow and ask the guy. Seems like a pretty honest guy I think I will pick it up even if it is a reseal (so long as it works) the box is is great shape plus it is the only store that sells retro games for like 300 miles so if I am over paying a little, oh well, keeping him in business I guess. Some of the prices are okay, some are a little questionable. Seems like all PS1 games are $5-10 but then a game like Super Mario Kart (just the cart)for the SNES is $40 Plus he's got everything, 32x, Sega CD even had a Colecovision CIB. No Jaguar though I had Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2 and Madden 97(??) picked out to get with it but I think when I get it I will get NBA JAM TE for my sports game (everyone of my systems needs atleast one sports game )instead of Madden and look a little better for Sega Rally and or Nights. I would still like to know an easy way to tell the difference between a never opened console and a reseal. Edited November 10, 2010 by GKC
marcfrick2112 #6 Posted November 10, 2010 GKC; You asked about the best games for the Saturn... Well, I'm a shooter fanatic, so bear this in mind And, get that Action Replay cart. ASAP! Radiant Silvergun - hideously expensive, but amazing Alien Trilogy Darius Gaiden Dezaemon 2 - the 'shooter maker' Any of the various Macross + Gundam side-scroll shooters Real Bout Fatal Fury Special Fighters Megamix D (amazing graphics, but painfully slow) Gex (dunno why I like it, really) Strikers 1945 I and/or II (too hard, and too short,... but cool) Capcom D&D Collection - again, hideously expensive... and my second disc got wrecked... so I'm bummed.. The Saturn has a great library, as long as you can play imports. There are many more great games for the Saturn, my brain's just not too good now... ('Nurse! More dried frog pills, STAT!') You won't regret getting a Saturn... I went from getting one for the 'hell of it' to having 2 systems w/AR carts and JVC TwinOperator video cards, and the odd mouse or wireless controller.. Now I just need one of those Saturn floppy drives.... A month ago I had never even seen a Saturn in real life, and now I somehow have two. $85 is a steal if it's actually sealed. Austin #7 Posted November 10, 2010 $85 is a steal if it's sealed. Even if it's not, if it has everything that came with it (A nice box, instructions, bonus discs, etc. etc.) then I'd say it's still worth it, even if it's a bit on the pricier end. It's just that these days it seems to be difficult to find CIB Saturn systems with everything included also being in tip-top shape.
The_Laird #8 Posted November 10, 2010 Sounds like a great deal for a new one, the Saturn really is my favourite home console. There are so many real AAA titles for the machine.
GKC #9 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) I went ahead and picked it up. It was resealed and not new. I wasn't able to talk him down from the $85 but he said he'd give me $20 store credit. It was CIB and the box is good structure wise but a little dirty. I can clean it up. I got with it: Virtua Fighter 1 & 2 CIB Sega Rally CIB Dayton CIB NBA Jam TE CIB Virtua Cop - (not sure how this will be without the gun ) Doom I cant say what it all came too because I picked up other things. I want to say the CIB games were $5-$10and the Loose were $2-$5. I'm pretty sure my $20 store credit just about covered all my Saturn games I purchased though. Now I need to test everything out now Edited November 10, 2010 by GKC

GKC #11 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Well the system works! Needs to be cleaned up a little bit and some light scratches that I may be able to polish out on front of it. One thing that is going to change real fast is that it came with an RF adapter Played a little bit of Dayton, fun game. Couldn't test out the other games because my son has a doctors appointment. Other than the RF adapter I am very happy with my purchase so far. Edited November 10, 2010 by GKC
BenG76 #12 Posted November 10, 2010 I have a couple Saturns myself. I really need to pick up some more games for it sometime. I dont have very many.

Tenorman #15 Posted November 11, 2010 I've always been a Saturn fan as well. Just thought I would mention that you absolutely have to pick up Panzer Dragoon I and II. Excellent shooters. Panzer Dragoon Saga is great as well, but I can't recommend it as much because of the price it goes for. Also, since the system has been presumably just sitting around for quite a while, you will want to replace the battery that backs the built in save space. If it isn't dead yet, it will be soon. It's just a standard CR2032. You can access it easily by taking off the little door on the back of the system. Have fun. Don't beat yourself up too much if you find yourself liking it more than the Jaguar. I have decent collections for both and I enjoy Saturn a lot more. (Unless we are talking about the aforementioned Doom, man that Saturn port is just inexcusable).

I had to keep setting the date/time everytime i powere it up and then remembered earing about exactly what you mentioned above. Thanks for posting the type of battery because that was going to be my next question
Austin #17 Posted November 11, 2010 Ah, it's cool to see you got it. Since it was resealed, the extra $20 in credit (therefore games) makes the deal worth it. DOOM is not so great as you've heard, but it's always good to give it a shot just to compare. The rest of the games are some solid (albeit cheap) titles and are great ones to start off with if you like '90s arcade gaming! Regarding the battery, like what was stated above, they are cheap and easy to replace. On top of that, I will recommend getting at least a Game Shark. It allows you to play import titles, and it has an 8MB memory card built in allowing you to backup your data. I believe the Saturn only has 600 blocks or less internally, and you will run out of space. An Action Replay is ideal if you want to do some more serious import gaming, but they are pricier (The GS is great just for backup purposes, and it's cheap). Blues_Bloody #18 Posted November 11, 2010 An Action Replay is ideal if you want to do some more serious import gaming, but they are pricier (The GS is great just for backup purposes, and it's cheap). Action Replays are not that much pricier than a Game Shark. You can get a brand new Action Replay for $30 from places like Amazon and Playasia. The Saturn Game Sharks I've seen for sale online cost about the same or a little less, but you would be better off in the long run with a Action Replay. You can get Game Sharks for around $10 if you frequent eBay. I'll have to check into the AR at Playasia for $30 though. Last I checked they were going for more than that, so I may have to snag one for myself.
GKC #20 Posted November 11, 2010 (edited) Thanks guys for the recommendations. Other than getting something better than the RF adapter right away I plan on getting the Stunner Gun and to go with it Area 51 and probably Virtua Cop 2. I already have Virtua Cop. I was going to say House of the Dead but looking at ebay I see it goes for upwards of $100. I will definitely look into the Panzor Dragoon series because I love shmups. Thanks for the recommendation. Also look into Nights and since you can't have a Sega without a Sonic perhaps Sonic 3D Blast. I'm also a big Resident Evil fan but I have never really played the first one. I don't have it for the PS1 and now that I have a Saturn I may as well get it for that. I think that will give me a well rounded Saturn Library with the games I already have. fdurso224 #21 Posted November 11, 2010 Hi guys, I'd say its worth it considering that the Sega Saturn was a truly underestimated console. My brother (spartanclone001) loves the console with its RPG's and arcade ports. Go for it buddy! Anthony....

Austin #23 Posted November 11, 2010 DO NOT USE THE SATURN GAME SHARK! It wrecks cartridge slots. And you're so sure it's the Game Shark causing the problems? Saturn cart slots are very finicky to begin with, Game Shark or not.

Virtua Cop really isn't that horrible without the light gun, but I agree that yes, the light gun would be preferable. I spent quite a bit of time with Resident Evil on the Saturn back in the day. It's a pretty good port. Some aspects of the game aren't quite as pretty as the PSX version, but some things are improved, so it evens out. You'll spend a fair amount more for it than the PSX version, but it still isn't too bad.
