Call of Duty Enjoys Most Successful Entertainment Launch Ever

Recommended Posts

In case this hasn't already been posted.

Video game maker Activision had the most profitable entertainment launch ever this week, selling 5.6 million copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops for a total of $360 million during the first 24 hours it went on sale. And that's not just the biggest opening day for a video game—Call of Duty beat out movies, too. (The most successful movie launch is "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which earned $394 million over its first three days). Opening sales for the Activision game also topped the previous record for entertainment sales, held by none other than Activision. Last year, the company sold 4.7 million copies ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in a single day. "There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement.

I'm not much for FPS games like this, but my friends and co-workers have been raving about this game. They were showing me videos and gameplay stuff at work and I have to admit, it looks pretty sweet.

I used to play Battlefield a lot so I'm sure I could jump into it.

My friends assure me it's fun to play offline as well. The game has a rich campaign mode that is fun to do in solo. It also has a easy training option, allowing anyone to pick the game up, learn it, and go from there. The maps are varied and interesting, and you can buy a version of the game that has all the DLC maps. The graphics and sound options are rich and well done, as well as the weapon choices. There's even a Zombie game mode. :)

The company that made the game, Tryarch, is a very good game developer also.

I'm defentily going to have to check this one out.

Darth Kotick can raspy breath in happiness all he wants because Black Op's is indeed an excellent game. I'm playing it daily and enjoying the heck out of it, as are many, many others.

But as for the claim that Call of Duty is the best selling "entertainment" franchise ever, ummmmmm.... that might be a little debatable :

Sheer sales: the last Harry Potter novel, Deathly Hallows, sold 11 million copies in 24hrs upon release in 2007. The previous Potter novel, Half Blood Prince, sold 9 million copies in 24hrs upon release. Both titles sold more in 24hrs than either CoD title. So you're really not #1, Bobby.

Consecutive Years Sales: if Scholastic Books had various "team writers" working on the Potter series so that a new novel could be released yearly rather than one writer working on the series and releasing every other year, you're probably not really #1 again, Bobby.

Profit figures: If Scholastic Books charged $60 a copy, you're not really #1 in that category either, Bobby.

As I said, I'm enjoying Black Op's and think its a blast. I just believe Darth Kotick and companions need to keep their comparisons realistic, i.e. game vs. game, book vs. book, movie vs. movie, etc.
