Zoyx #1 Posted December 5, 2010 (edited) What is a good replacement for a xybots joystick in a mame setup? Edited December 5, 2010 by Zoyx
Cebus Capucinis #2 Posted December 5, 2010 AFAIK there is none, unless you have a joysick that also serves a rotary function. I guess you could always map 'rotate left' and 'rotate right' to a couple buttons if you have more than 4 buttons on your setup. That might work. keilbaca #3 Posted December 6, 2010 The original joystick is spring loaded, and when you twisted it left or right, it hit a leaf switch to target it. You might not be able to do the spring portion, but it should be pretty easy if the joystick hangs down a bit to come up with something that attaches to the bottom. I wish I still had my Xybots, or else I'd take a pic of the joystick for you.
Zoyx #4 Posted December 6, 2010 I used to own a Xybots, but gave it to a friend. I am making progress. I have a couple of PC joysticks that twist, but are too sensitive. I need to increase the deadzone. Once I figure that out, I should have a winner.
BigO #5 Posted December 6, 2010 There's that Ms. Pac-man Plug-n-play with Pole Position. It has a rotary action in the joystick for steering. If you happen to be building a teensy, easily breakable MAME machine, you're all set..
jhd #6 Posted December 7, 2010 I guess you could always map 'rotate left' and 'rotate right' to a couple buttons if you have more than 4 buttons on your setup. That might work. This is how it is handled in the Midway Arcade Treasures collection (Volume 2) on the PS 2, at least -- the shoulder buttons are used to rotate. It makes the game nearly unplayable. It makes the game nearly unplayable. I tried this with a couple spare buttons on my mame setup, and had some success. Not as instinctual as the twist, however. Those things are pretty cheap though, I doubt they would work very well.
RJ #10 Posted December 17, 2010 ...the shoulder buttons are used to rotate. It makes the game nearly unplayable. Umm, I beg to differ- maybe it's just me but I can whip around left & right rather well in that version. Works pretty good IMO.
patbb #11 Posted December 20, 2010 Found this on Flickr.com It showing the joystick for inside. The Right/Left portion looks like a simple thing to do but like Keibaca was saying the spring action might be difficult. more here
