Red Yars' Revenge double label?

Recommended Posts

I was just playing Yars' Revenge last night and noticed that my cartridge appears to have another label below the front and end label. the cartridge is the Atari Corp. red label variety, NTSC, and is in otherwise very good condition. It looks like the labels underneath the red ones (front and end) are black. It is the standard "late model" cart w/o the spring mechanism and with the holes under the label.

Does anyone have any ideas why my cart seems to be a retread? :-D :ponder:

I can try and post a picture or two tonight if anyone is interested...

Yes, I'm interested.

Would like to add this picture to the database.

I agree that black labels on a cart style #3 seems like a highly unusual combination, but I'm no expert on variations. Somebody around here is, though.

It's very probable that Atari had a lot of older, loose carts leftover in the warehouse when the red boxes were printed so they slapped red labels on top of the older ones and put them in the newer red boxes. It would have taken too much time and people would have had to have been paid to peel off the old labels from each one before applying the new ones so just covering up the old labels was best. What would be interesting would be to discover that something really rare, like Gravitar with a silver label is hiding under some of the dirt common red label versions of that game and all you have to do is separate the top red label from the silver one underneath to increase the value of your cart.

Ok, so I was able to snap a few pictures this morning of the cartridge. This is the first time I have tried attaching photos here with my new camera, so I hope the files aren't too big.

It might be hard to see, but there are definitely other labels underneath the red ones.

What if it has some crazy rare label underneath!! I doubt it, but hey, it's just a red Yars, nothing that can't be replaced ;)

One with two labels originally can't be replaced. D;

I bet it was an old-inventory (black picture label) Yars cart that got new stickers when Atari switched to red labels. They probably had a bunch of old carts that needed to ship with new packaging.

It can't be an old one since it uses the Atari Corp. shell with the holes in it.

Oh well, I see now that I was basically restating an earlier comment anyway (apologies to OldAtarian, above).

Maybe there's a way to "see through" the top label without peeling it? I suppose a CT scan would be impractical.

ET didn't come in black. It's a Yar's label. It's as if someone made a mistake and used the wrong label, and then they said... no no, we have new red ones. This is an interesting find, like that white CBS game I had last year. Not terribly valuable, but unique.

So if I peel it, will I end up with an "ultra rare, super valuable Black Label Society variety" Yars' Revenge? :D

Or will I end up with a piece of junk... :_(

I think I'll just leave it alone and play it. 8)

Was it a white Blueprint? Rumor has it that was a pack in for the mail order Columbia house atari system. They are pretty rare but pop up undetected from time to time.

It depends on how you look at it, rarity does not equal money in this case so if you are worried about ruining something valuable, you will not be. Now, in response to my earlier post, yes it is very true you will probably not find another one like this. I still think if you heat it up real good with a hair dryer you should be able to peel it off without damaging it though. Aren't you a little curious....what if it was a lab loaner label!

Lab loaners wouldn't look glossy black. They would be more matte I think?

I'd keep it the way it is and play it... OR trade it to me plus a slight fee and upgrade my red one ;)

Oh yeah, I think it was a Blue Print that was white cart... It only sold for $19. Wish I just kept it.

Yar's isn't particularly valuable in either red or black and peeling it might cause irreparable damage to both labels leaving you with a label-less or damaged label cart that will definitely be worth less than a cart with either label intact.
