Zeptari1 #1 Posted December 24, 2010 That's me and my brother on the Christmas we got our Colecovison. fun times... the DK high score is mine!!! I still say the Colecovison was one of the first next gen systems... Some people want to group all of the old systems before Nintendo and put them in the same era! I say no! What the nes is to the snes... the atari is to the colecovison... just compare zaxxon on both systems... i know someone here must understand what i'm saying... -rick

SlowCoder #3 Posted December 24, 2010 Candid shots are the best. Looks to be late 70s-early 80s. Which one are you? I don't group them all together, and I think most people here consider the CV generation 2.5 (me), or 3 (close to the NES). You are correct that grouping them all together would be inappropriate. But you also can't say that the 2600 is Gen 2, and because the Intellivision is a little better it's Gen 3, and since the CV is even more powerful, it must be Gen 4. There has to be some grouping/range.
fiddlepaddle #4 Posted December 25, 2010 The whole "generation" model really isn't appropriate for a technology that evolves by leapfrog improvement. What generation is my GM truck? What generation is my HP 12C calculator? What generation is my briefcase? Who cares?

I think i had about a dozen games for it back in the day. I strongly remember playing these off the top of my head: Donkey Kong, 2010, Zaxxon, Defender, Gateway to Apshai(my first RPG!), Jumpman,Montezuma's Revenge and Time Pilot... i'm sure there's more.. Time to go find an emulator... -rick

The generation labels are a failed attempt of classification, as though consoles were tree frogs that needed to be in the same genus and species. IMO it isn't very effective, descriptive, or useful. (Classifying consoles, not tree frogs.)

The generation labels are a failed attempt of classification, as though consoles were tree frogs that needed to be in the same genus and species. IMO it isn't very effective, descriptive, or useful. (Classifying consoles, not tree frogs.) Shouldn't consoles simply be classified by their "prime" time periods? For example, The Atari 2600 was released in 1978 (I think) and was in its prime until the crash of 84, while the ColecoVision was released in 1981 or 82, and was also in its prime until 84. Since their "prime" periods overlap, they were commercial competitors, so they belong to the same "generation". The ColecoVision and NES aren't from the same generation because their prime periods don't overlap, and so Coleco and Nintendo were therefore never competitors. That's how I've always envisionned video game generations anyway.

These days, I have all the systems from that era, CV, INTV, VCS, 5200, 7800, SMS. They are all great systems to collect and play. Emulation just doesn't cut it for me.
