4Ks #1 Posted January 1, 2011 I have tried twice to get MAME, but both times there was some problem. The first time, it started up, but couldn't do anything except display a list of every arcade game ever made. The second time, the download didn't even HAVE the MAME.exe file in it. Can someone direct me to a working MAME download, and walk me through how to use it?
Mirage #2 Posted January 1, 2011 Just download MAMEUI from the official site: http://www.mameui.info/ There's instructions. It's pretty self-explanatory (once you get the right one).
OldSchoolRetroGamer #3 Posted January 1, 2011 (edited) It really isn't a case of getting a "working download" the MAME program/Frontend/ROMS in a single package would be a massive file, it's about putting it all together and setting it up properly. That list of games are just reference, you need the ROM files in combo with MAME and a front-end to go with it all to make it easier on yourself. I could be wrong but this type of thing has come up before resulting in the person usually giving up at the end because what happens is a back and forth, back and forth step by step process because typically nobody ends up going through it whole thing from start to finish, one of the reasons being the time and effort and even more because the info is ALREADY out there and already done by people more patient and knowledgeable. Start searching and Googling terms like: "Beginner's guide to MAME" "Mame Guide" etc, and sort it out for yourself. I am not being an ass, for an example read through this thread: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/159906-mame-is-a-piece-of/page__hl__mame%20help Also, you could try searching YOUTUBE for a visual instruction on how to get MAME up and running, a lot of nice patient people have already done the work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfsE5NQ4yys Again, I am just cutting through the inevitable super long thread this is destined to become by pointing you to the help you require BUT BY ALL MEANS please anyone else who knows of a better way or has better advice or links or heck the time to go through every detail and step feel free to chime in. Mirage #4 Posted January 1, 2011 Oh, LOL, I was just assuming he knew he needed the ROMs. Yeah, I agree, the info is out there, it's really dead simple to do. I'm not sure why anyone ever has any trouble with it at all. But if you don't have the ROMs, then that's your problem. Find a torrent of the ROMs and you should be all set. +wood_jl #5 Posted January 1, 2011 You mean they don't include all the roms with MAME? Why not?
SoulBlazer #6 Posted January 5, 2011 You mean they don't include all the roms with MAME? Why not? I wish they DID. I spent months trying to gather together a collection of my favorite games, finally finished at about 400, and then lost it all when my HD died. I just haven't taken the time to try to assemble it again. Can't even get a BT of them to work. I do hear, though, there are sites that will put together a CD for you for minimal (read shipping and CD) cost.
Mirage #7 Posted January 5, 2011 I do hear, though, there are sites that will put together a CD for you for minimal (read shipping and CD) cost. Yes, there are. If you can't get a torrent to work, I'd highly recommend them. I've done it a couple times. Got a lot more than MAME too. Google MAMEBurners.

Far easier than trying to get it on your own and everything is setup right for the updates. Highly recommended, especialyl considering the price. Also note: If you get the MAME cds/dvds, make sure to spend the extra few bucks and get the HD images for the roms also. Cliff
