God of War (PS2) - (A)

Far Cry Instincts (XBOX) - (B)

Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2) - (B+)

Dragon Age: Origins (XBOX 360) - (A)

Metroid Prime (GC) - (A-) One of the most immersive games I've ever played. I'm amazed that the Metroid formula translated so well to 3D. This game is a masterpiece of design. I played the first 20 hours in slack-jawed awe. Unfortunately, much of that initial luster wore off after I'd backtracked through the various environs of the game at least a half a dozen times. I know backtracking is an integral part of the Metroid formula, and I love it, but in the first person perspective, I think the heavy amount of backtracking hurts this game. The final hours really started to feel like a chore to me, and that's a shame. I'd also have to say that the controls weren't ideal. Every moment of frustration I had with this game could be directly attributed to the control scheme. It really should have been a dual-analog game. That said, this is still a outstanding game. It's the best game I've played on the Gamecube, and I rank it as one of the greatest games of its generation.

Tomb Raider: Legend (GC) - (B+) I didn't care much for the first half dozen ( :ponder: ) Tomb Raiders, but I really enjoyed this one... while it lasted. If I got 10 hours out of it, I'd be surprised. The last two levels are especially short. If I'd have paid full price, I'd probably be annoyed by these facts. I guess there's some replay value though as I didn't unlock everything. Regardless, this was a great ride from start to finish. The game knows what it is and does it well. It doesn't try to reinvent itself every other level. Good story and sharp dialogue as well. Short and sweet just about sums it up. I'll be tracking down the sequel.

Thanks, it's on my list! :)

This evening finally a workmate will join me for playing through Exed Exes and then we'll make an attempt at Sonson. The later should be much harder, since Sonson doesn't seem to offer continues :o

Yay, one more down! As predicted earlier today, Exed Exes can be added to my list of completed Capcom games. The hardest part was enduring the music, and I can absolutely not recommend this one ;)

Capcom games beaten in 2011: Ghosts'n Goblins, Commando, 1942 & Exed Exes!

Beat Metal Slug X for the PS1 yesterday. It was my first experience with any of the Metal Slug games and I have to say that it lived up to expectations. Goofiness mixed with great game play will never disappoint as far as I am concerned.

I compacted my list form because it is getting too long. During the begininng of the week I beat Bignose, Dizzy and Spider-Man/X-Men; all of which are hard long games that you also have to beat in one sitting. Well, Bignose is the shortest of the three but in order to do well you pretty much have to make it through most of the game without taking a hit.

22. Mission Asteroid (Commodore 64)

This text adventure came to us on the flip side of The Wizard and the Princess, a much bigger and more complex game that my girlfriend and I finished last year. Mission Asteroid, by contrast, is extremely simplistic, and we were able to finish it in exactly three hours of gameplay.

It does have one nasty catch, though. The game has a very strict time limit of 7 hours and 15 minutes, and every action you take costs 5 minutes (so you have a total of 87 moves to finish it). Trouble is, everything counts: if you make a typo, or type in any command the computer doesn't understand, you lose 5 minutes; if you check to see how much time you have left, that costs 5 minutes; and if you save your game, well, it turns out that costs 5 minutes too. Ridiculous!

BTW I also got my perfect score in Pitfall. :)

23. Tennis (Game Boy)

Beat the computer, 7-6(5) 6-2, on the highest difficulty (Level 4).

Nice to play a tennis game that rewards, rather than punishes, serve-and-volley play. Some sources describe this as a port of the original Tennis game for NES but if so it's been massively rewritten, as the gameplay in the Game Boy version is light-years better than that awful trainwreck of a game.

Still can't figure out how to handle overheads, though -- if the computer had simply lobbed every ball, I wouldn't have had a chance! The key was staying back until the last possible moment so the computer would hit a normal groundstroke, whereupon I'd rush the net and, more often than not, hit a winning volley.

78. May 20 - Tekken 3 - PS1

79. May 22 - Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout - PS1

80. May 25 - Vandal-Hearts - PS1

Of these last three games I've beaten, Vandal-Hearts took the longest but also drew me to complete it in less days. The story really draws you in and completing just one level can take a half hour or more if you are trying to beat each one without losing any characters, finding all the secret treasures and killing every single enemy. I made sure I did that.

Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout got repetetive fast. It takes more effort to level up than in Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22. You actually have to go back and level up your kicking if your main attack is punching, just in order to gain more health.

Tekken 3 is even easier than Tekken 2 from what I can tell. Plays much more smoothly. The original three Tekkens were fun and good for their time, but the first Tekken I ever played was Tekken 4. Playing the original three first made me appreciate how smooth the fourth one is that much more. I have yet to play any DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, or Xbox games this year but am looking forward to when I get that far.

24. Shadow: War of Succession (3DO)

Got this in the mail yesterday, beat it on Beginner difficulty last night, and beat Intermediate and Advanced today. Total playtime: barely over an hour.

One of the worst games I've ever played! I can't imagine paying retail for garbage like this -- it's like a cross between a terrible Mortal Kombat ripoff and a late 1990s Flash game. I was able to win every match by endlessly spamming my projectile attack, together with an occasional teleport move or series of uppercuts.

About the only positive note is that the controls are fairly responsive, and it's easy to execute most special attacks (which is good, because melee attacks are mostly useless). Having played an hour-long session of Art of Fighting the other day, half of which I spent swearing at the game for ignoring my fireball and uppercut attempts, that's something I appreciate.
