31. Tomcat Alley (Sega CD)

Despite a few frustrating and/or tricky moments, it wasn't too hard to beat this FMV funfest on both Easy and Hard -- which didn't seem much harder than Easy -- after four-hours-and-change of gameplay. I'd give it a C, though there are a few things I still don't understand in the game.

Haven't beaten a game in a while (at least not on the hardest settings), so it was nice to get back in the saddle.

32. History Mystery (Apple II)

I'm not the only one who harbored childhood memories of this odd educational game in which you explore a museum and bribe historical figures with pastries, but couldn't remember what it was called. Thanks to a couple sleuths on Atariage and the preservation efforts of Apple II buffs, I was able to beat it a quarter-century after I first played the game! It's not quite as weird or colorful as I remembered, but it's still a wild feeling to finish it after all these years.

33. Sol-Feace (Sega CD)

Finally beat this thing on Mania, five months to the day after I first beat it on Normal. I sat down planning a marathon attempt, but it only took a little over half an hour, thanks in part to the fact that I made it to the Level 6 boss with missiles. That makes such a difference. In fact I think I made it through Levels 4-7 without continuing at all, though if I'm totally candid I did hit the pause button in a few places where things got hairy.

I'd give Sol-Feace a C-minus. It has a lot of promising aspects, but the sound FX are too loud and flatulent, the difficulty level completely miscalibrated, and the disappearing bullets are inexcusable. To be honest I kind of hate the game, but part of that is because it could be terrific, and instead it's terrifically frustrating.

34. Star Wars Chess (Sega CD)

Since the Sega CD was set up, I thought I'd fire up Star Wars Chess. Even on the highest difficulty setting, the AI in this game is pathetic! It doesn't appear to have an opening book, and it plays very passive, beginner-level chess. Even the Intellivision chess game is stronger than this.

I had the Black pieces, and after the computer gave away a piece quite early in the game (Bb5-a6?? followed by my ...bxa6), it was smooth sailing. Just to be sure I'd set the difficulty correctly, I began a second game, and the computer played the exact same moves. Yikes.

Between the laggy interface and the terrible AI, I think this gets an F. The cutscenes are amusing once, but...

I just beat Gun.Smoke and unlocked all 4 extras in Capcom Classic Collection! :D

Capcom games beaten in 2011: Ghosts'n Goblins, Commando, 1942, Exed Exes, Sonson, Vulgus, Pirate Ship Higemaru, Trojan & Gun.Smoke!

Try Gunsmoke! Its really challenging!

You were right, the difficulty level is insane. I had the PS2 running for 16 full days to beat it :o

BTW: The music of the 2nd level is one of the best video game tunes I heard from Capcom ever:

35. Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly (Game Boy)

While the power was out, I decided to take on this Simpsons platformer, which actually predates the sort-of corresponding episode of the show ("Kamp Krusty"). After a few attempts I managed to beat it by the skin of my teeth, with no lives or health bars remaining at the end. I had plenty of health and extra lives until I got about 75% of the way through the game, but lost most of those in some tricky platforming sections.

Reviews of Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly appear to be mostly negative, but I quite enjoyed it for the most part. Overall I'd give it a B+. The controls have a bit of 8-bit awkwardness but generally handle well once you get used to their quirks. The game has a few moments that hint at early Simpsons-style humor, and interestingly, it also rewards you for altruism.

That was quick! Today I received Capcom Classics Collection 2 and this evening me and my wife beat Avengers in co-op already! (unlocking all 3 extras of course ;))

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (XBOX) - (B+)

Stranger's Wrath feels like two separate games to me. It's as if the developers had two different concepts in mind for this game, but couldn't decide which one to go with, so they just compromised and sewed the two together right down the middle. The first part of the game could best be described as a lengthy series of Boss fights, one after another, that are held together by a weak narrative. These fights are fun and a couple of them are quite challenging, but after the first half dozen, a distinct feeling of repetitiveness begins to set in. After a half dozen more of these fights, I found myself struggling to stay engaged with the game. I suppose it's fortunate then that it's right around this point that the game essentially starts over. Everything that happened in the first half of the game is suddenly made of no real consequence anymore, and everything you acquired in the first act is essentially stripped away from you as the gameplay switches to the structure of a more traditional FPS. The second half of the game keeps all the action and most of the humor from the first half, but the overall design changes substantially--the whole wild west theme gets tossed out the window. It's also at this point that the narrative finally kicks in. Unfortunately, it mostly stumbles along, becomes convoluted, and doesn't end up anywhere all that satisfying.

Judged on its technical and creative merits, Stranger's Wrath is an impressive game, and it easily ranks among the best of its contemporaries in those two areas. However, the game is weakened by structural problems in its design, gameplay, and narrative, and as a consequence Stranger's Wrath falls just short of greatness.

36. Shadow Of The Beast (Genesis)

I had fun working my way through this one, which I started on Monday and beat today. The US version of the Genesis port has been widely criticized for sped-up gameplay vs. the original (and the Japanese MD version), but I didn't have any real trouble getting used to it. I did practice the last two levels in an emulator, which helped to ease the frustration factor, and I also found a couple tricks to obtain additional health refills. Once I put that strategy together, beating the game was fairly straightforward, though it still demands accurate play.

Overall I'd give it a B+, though veterans of the Amiga version would probably penalize it more for the speed difference and the simplified music and sound FX.

37. Thunder Force II (Genesis)

Unexpectedly beat this one on Hard/5 Lives, though I had to use all my continues to do it, and I'll admit to looking at maps and playthroughs online to help figure out where to go/what to do. The final boss is pretty cheap, but doable if you have enough ships to sacrifice, especially if you get a shield right before you attack the core.

Decent enough game with no real technical flaws, but not terribly engaging. I'd give it a B-minus.

38. The Smurfs (Genesis)

Beat this tricky platformer on Easy yesterday, and Medium and Hard today. It's a lot like the Master System game (which I beat a while ago), but some level layouts and enemies are different, and the raft level that's a "proper" level in the SMS version is a bonus level in this one. BTW, around half of the levels are much shorter when played on Easy mode, so you only see the whole game if you play on Medium or Hard.

Also like the SMS game, it's also frustrating in spots, but the password system helps a lot. Actually I barely used any passwords/continues when I beat Hard -- I think I played it straight through from Act 5 on, since I had built up a cushion of extra lives from the bonus rounds.

Overall I'd give it a B, the same grade I gave the Master System version. It's a nice-looking and nice-sounding game, but while the controls and level design are mostly good, there are just enough aggravating moments to take it down a notch.

Just played through Duke Nukem Forever on the 360 and other than the loading times I really don't see why there was so much hate for the game. Maybe it has just been too long time since I have played a modern first person shooter and they are far different now but it seemed like a solid one.
